The GTX 980 Ti owners thread.

I'm looking to get 2 x gtx 980ti. I've never had an sli rig before. What's your experience with sli is it worth it or a complete hassle. Do most games work ok or will I spend most time tweaking

It's really worth it. Dual 980Ti's are my second run at SLI since the old 7950GX2, and honestly so far it's been like using single powrful card.

The only game I've found that doesn't work with it so far is the new Batman, although that's so broken all around that they pulled it off of Steam.

I game at 1440p, and being able to max everything is brilliant.

I had 780ti's in SLI and for the most part it worked really well. On every major release I had SLI support either on day 1 or at least within a week of release. I have just ordered a single 980Ti and i'm more than open to the idea of getting another one down the line.

The only bad thing for me was really the heat 2 video cards knocked out into my room made gaming a little uncomfortable. I didn’t like the fact that every time I downloaded the latest drivers I had to re-enable SLI, that got a little annoying. The biggest issue I guess is you are totally reliant on the games being coded well for SLI. Obviously the disaster that is the latest Batman game is a good example, SLI is not supported at all, though the game is a mess regardless.

My advice would be to buy a single card if you think it's more than likey enough power to play the games you want to play at the settings you want, if/when it starts to stuggle you can either buy another card to go SLI or perhaps, by then the next flagship card will be out and could be a better option.

May put a waterblock on, I'm sad I didn't put a 360 rad in the roof, it was leaving space for fury X rad and ended up with a 980ti XD.

To get on the Roll of Honour all you have to do is post a pic with your user name on it of your 980 Ti.

Has anyone been getting the issue with the Nvidia drivers/kernel crashing? Screen goes blank for 1-4 seconds then comes back saying the Nvidia drivers crashed. Widely reported on the internet.

Only fix so far is to crack open MSI Afterburner on each boot up and drop the clocks by -90. After I do that the PC runs fine all day until the next restart. For some reason Afterburner doesn't remember these settings so has to be done on every restart. Cards idle at 39 degrees when they crash, so it's not a load/overheating issue, and it doesn't matter if I'm in a game or just browsing the web, it happens all the same.

Highly frustrating.

Were these drivers outsourced to AMD?

Would love a 980Ti or a Fury but looking at the prices, through work I just got a price of 287.95 for a 390X so I am thinking I will go that route, wait it out on the 390x until the 16/20nm chips land and the new memory format has been ironed out :)

What have you guys been clocking your reference cards to, and at what fan speed?

Is the nVidia reference cooler considered to be quieter than the Radeon R9 290 reference cooler when the fan speed is cranked up? The review at Anandtech seems to suggest not :(
