I would agree my friend but my systems has 3 x 360 rads. The 780Ti sits idle unless I play Metro or something

I think it'll be number 2 for me down the line. The 980Ti is a beast of a card and will last years....babies will become men by the time 980Ti sli is obsolete.

but it depends on performance and if it has any new features over maxwell

I got my delivery of my Strix 980 ti yesterday, but I am getting the dreaded coil whine in games. It is quite loud when I sit at my desk, and my case is insulted in sound dampening material.

Does this warrant a swap with OCUK and Asus?

It should do, but coil whine isn't a fault, and it's one of those things you have to put up with.

Hello all,

Well last Thursday I made the jump from my old AMD 6970, to a new 980Ti Asus Strix OC. I'd made some other hardware changes since the 6970 but only just got around to upgrading the video card. I also treated myself to a ROG Swift 27" to go along with it.

First few days were fine. Didn't do any gaming as was re-installing Windows and a few others things, but i did notice the temps. Idleing at 58-60degrees idle in Windows 10. Kind of a little high, but then again it is designed to be passive so didnt think too much of it. This is in a well ventilated 750D.

Loaded up Hitman Absolution sunday night and ran the in game benchmark. Approx 5-10 seconds in - Reboot. Ok. Doesn't POST. Turn off/on. Back into Windows. Try again. Same thing. Hmmm. This time however, the lack of POST was met with a VGA_LED on the motherboard, and eventually after about a 30 second delay, booted into Windows. This time, artifacts all over the screen. Nothing i did removed them.

Just to rule out the power supply or new monitor as being faulty, I put this into the downstairs PC with a 1000W power supply and HDMI monitor. Same thing. VGA_LED first, then after delayed POST, windows and glitches all over the screen.

The only thing I thought might be an issue from the off was my BeQuiet 630W PSU not being powerful enough, but in all fairness, im only running a stock 3770k, 3xSSD and one DVD drive and the video card. No overclocks.

Am I one of the few % that got a bad'un? Ive arranged an RMA with OCUK already but wanted to get your thoughts on the matter. I've also upgraded PSU to a BeQuiet 850W Platinum whilst i'm at it because I know the recommended PSU wattage is 600+W, so for peace of mind i've spent more than I wanted to on another PSU.

I've asked to have the MSI 6G Gaming as the replacement instead of another Strix simply because the MSI has more positive reviews on the web going for it.

Question for all fellow 980Ti owners :

What's your plans this year?

1. Stick with what you have.
2. Add second hand to what you have when prices fall (basically, go SLI).
3. Upgrade to the first Pascal that outperforms what you have now.
4. Upgrade to 1080Ti.
5. Something else.

4. Upgrade to 1080Ti. Only if it shows a 50%+ improvement from what I have currently, if not will wait for the next Ti or the top end none Titan mainstream. Not the mid range sold as top end of course.

We can hope the 1080Ti is out this year but I really doubt it too, guessing 2017 and hope the new manufacturing process and architecture improves things. (not like what we have with cpus currently)

Would you say 59 degree idle (passive) is too toasty? Looking at the other design cards, they appear to idle about the mid 30s. A lot lower by most standards.

Will keep updated, but I always choose ocuk because of their support in circumstances like this. Here's hoping I can get things sorted for the weekend

59 degree idle would have been a mixture of zero fan passive cooling and 3D clocks running due to chrome or similar app running. So, it was normal.

59 degrees is nothing in terms of risk to the components.

Still toying with the idea of returning for the coil whine in my Strix, it's not very loud but I know it is there, though it has become something I 'listen out' for when gaming, and I know I should really just forget about it.

My PSU is a Seasonic G 550w, I know some people have reduced coil whine by replacing their PSUs, but realistically I probably wouldn't get a benefit from upgrading to a Leadex Platinum 550/650w or similar would I?
