I have used New Street almost everyday for over 5 years and I have never seen any problems like what the OP describes. Yes there are beggers outside but what major doesnt have them?
The main problem I find with the place is overcrowding and the nasty dirty platforms. Building a shopping centre over the top did not help but when they redsigned the station back in the 60's they expected all trains to be electric by now.

Now if only we could lose Cardiff in some kind of thermonuclear "accident" all would be well.

I went to Liverpool the other day, via Birmingham.
I didn't find either of them to be particularly nice, to be honest. Neither are a patch on Bristol or anywhere in Somerset.
I went to bridgewater one time on my way to Cornwall, stopped at the macdonalds for a snack for the kids and saw a 12 y.o lad being chased by the police, probably for robbing a big mac or something lol. Bridgewater is a dump!
The only reason we ended up there is because 2 lorries crashed on the M5 and blocked the whole motorway, stuck in heavy traffic jams for 4 hours - wasn't fun
