The King of Limbs is here

If this was a debut album by some unknown artist would it get dismissed as tosh?

Probably not.

I don't particularly think The XX and their debut album is as good as people make out (I do like it though), but this is good in it's own right. Also, you've got to think, wtf does a band do when they've made records like OK Computer, The Bends and to a lesser extent In Rainbows and Kid A? (that's just demonstrating my bias towards the earlier Radiohead stuff there :p)

One thing I love about RH is that they don't just keep doing the same thing, they don't stand still and fizzle out, they bring new ideas to the table, they evolve, the keep things fresh. And lets be honest, they aren't doing this for the money or the pats on the back any more, they are doing what they want to do (no major record label telling them what to do or giving them artistic direction) and doing it for themselves.

So, is The King Of Limbs a good album? I'm not sure yet, it'll take a few weeks of listening until I can slot it into my personal ranking of RH albums.

I think there will be a second LP to go along side this very shortly, don't know what it is but it has the Kid A/Amnesiacish feel to it. But it's RH so **** knows.

Awesome album, Little by Little is a belter.

TBH honest you're not missing much. Don't think anyone will be talking about this as a classic, just seems more like ideas, unfinished snippets of sounds/songs albeit expertly produced. I imagine once the curiosity/excitement of a new RH album has susbsided it will just sit in a folder unloved and unplayed. Disappointed after In Rainbows although not surprised considering this is RH. At least the latest Mogwai is out & its a cracker.

Yea, always takes a little while to get proper into them :)

Even if I won't like this one too much I always have respect for bands who keep trying new things instead of churning out whatever sells.

Hmm..There's just nothing to it really. Heavy electronics, the occasional piano and Thom's voice wallowing over it all. Rinse and repeat. I grew up loving Radiohead and it just seems wrong to see their name on stuff like this.
If this was genuinlly a natural change (it's not a progression) from their first 3 albums, then fair enough. But I find it just bizarre to re-listen to the likes of Pable Honey, The Bends and to a less extent OK Computer and see how much they have changed. I find it kinda sad :(

They probably wouldn't be one of my favourite bands if they just kept churning out records like the above though, it would have got old.

I guess this is where RH fans get divided though. Some embrace the diversity, others reject the move away from guitars and the traditional rock sounding tracks of the earlier albums.

I think it's fair to say that they have evolved, not really changed. It's natural considering their attitudes towards the industry and the fact they are ageing just like the rest of us. Middle of the night ramble over.
