The last game you completed, and rating.

This is actually a very good thread for some games to play in the future that I might have overlooked.

I can’’t speak for others, but its’ rare for me to finish a game, because it needs for that game to be gripping from start to finish.

Very few games manage to pull this off.

The original Mafia game was excellent, and was a game you had to finish.
Compare that to Mafia 3, when halfway through you realised you were doing the same thing over and over again, and so like, what’s the point in doing that for another 10-15 hours.

It’s the same with the far cry series. Far Cry 3 was amazing, everything after that was more of the same, but less as well.

So I’m going to have a good read through this thread. Excellent post OP.

Detroit: Become Human

11 hours of entertainment for £3.39. Cant even get a pint for that.

i really enjoyed it. Slick and looked great. Not a single bug or issue. 8/10 for me.

Everyone died lol, except Connor, who maybe should have done? so maybe i didnt make the best decisions.

I'm showing my age a bit, and the fact that I have not gamed in many years.

However, back when I did game a bit, I loved (and completed) these games:

"Very old":
  • Syndicate. Oh yes, Syndicate. This is really for the over-40s crowd to remember. Outstanding game. 10/10.
  • Syndicate: American Revolt. Think of this as a rock-hard version of Syndicate. I needed to follow article instructions (and then later, YouTube tutorials) to complete many missions. Great game. 9/10.
  • Syndicate Wars. Another outstanding game. As far as I am aware, there are modern modded versions which allow the game to be played with a "modern-day" (i.e., very large) field of view. Instructions are on YouTube about this. 10/10.

"Old":
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Wonderful game. The ambience, the colour schemes, the design language, the music, the storylines, the world-building and settings, the in-game reading materials, the possibilities and options to progress. There were so many memorable moments in this game. 10/10.
  • Deus Ex: Human Revolution -- The Missing Link. Deep and immersive, and another wonderful game. 10/10.
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. Another great game. 10/10.
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided -- System Rift "DLC" ("Downloadable Content"). Very, very well conceived. Some deep story and lore is available via those determined enough to break into the bank's vaults -- and read the text materials therin -- during this game. 8/10.
  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided -- A Criminal Past "DLC" ("Downloadable Content"). Brilliantly conceived. 9/10.

I missed out on the original Deus Ex, and started with the newer games (above) only. I was looking forwards to another. So, it was sad news to hear that early work on a proposed new game was cancelled. However, I'm hopeful that the intellectual property can be sold to a studio that is genuinely keen on it, and which can make it work in the tradition of the prior games. Deus Ex is a classic franchise in my opinion.

Sniper Ghost Warrior Contracts 2 - 6/10

Played through the first one and enjoyed it, so went for a second round. For some reason I didn’t enjoy this one as much as I did the first… the story is kinda cringe and I thought the maps felt smaller and easier than the first.

Overall though, it’s an OK sniper game with a few bugs here and there!

Ball x Pit: 6/10

I don't quite get the hype for this one. I played it through to completion because it's easy to play in 20 minute bursts, but it never really gripped me. I think I was expecting a bit more Arkanoid and a bit less Vampire Survivors. They might have done well to slow things down a bit, have fewer enemies but actually have some consequence to failing to catch the balls.

Old one that's taken me years, Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay.

Holds up surprisingly well considering it's over 20 years old. The lighting and texture quality is still quality and gameplay is really fun.

Solid 8/10.

Look forward to starting the sequel at some point!

Yakuza: Like a Dragon: 9/10

Not sure whether this one strictly counts for my thread, as it's my second time through the game (on NG+ this time). I played this back at launch in 2020 and it was my introduction to the Yakuza series. I'd been put off in the past by a combination of reports of deeply janky brawler combat and incredibly complex lore, but with the shift to RPG gameplay and a new protagonist, it seemed like a good on-ramp. And indeed, it was. I went on to play Infinite Wealth and Pirate Yakuza at launch, with the latter slightly curing my phobia of the brawlers. Then back in March this year, I sat down to tackle Yakuza 0, with the intention of getting through to the end of 6 by the end of the year - which I just about managed. Having done that, I thought I'd go back to Like a Dragon and replay it with the benefit of knowing the franchise's lore and being able to pick up stuff I'd missed first time through.

Does it change things? Yes, a bit. While Like a Dragon is indeed a good entry point to the series, it still sits in the world that the older game created. The middle 50% or so of Like a Dragon floats fairly free of that, but the opening and closing 25%s both have a lot of crossover with the earlier games. I certainly got more from the story from knowing the context of the Tojo Clan, the Omi Alliance and why characters like Daigo and Majima were such a big deal.

As for the game itself... the switch to a new protagonist was a good move. By the end of Yakuza 6, it was clear they were struggling for ways to keep Kiryu's narrative going, so a fresh start was great. I do hope they continue to keep Ichiban as the main lead, after that wobble they had in Infinite Wealth (and it'd be great if they could announce the next main-series game soon, k pls thx). The switch of genres is a bit less assured and, weirdly, I think it feels like a slight step down from the fairly polished brawling of 6. In particular, the very high encounter rate combined with the longer time required to clear each encounter does drag the pace down a bit. Some of the brawlers also set their encouinter rate too high (particularly 5), but at least there most random fights were cleared in seconds. I also think it was a mistake, with such a small party, to make one of the characters optional and to make her invisible during all the story scenes. The story is a good one, though, and one of the most grounded in the series, with very few of the more overblown or fantastical elements (no secret WW2 battleships or snowmobile chases).

But overall, yeah, it still stands up well. It's an obvious entry-point for new players, but knowing the lore and context does mean you get more out of it.

Next up - The Man Who Erased His Name, before a return to Infinite Wealth.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II
So much about this game is just immaculately done. Full of interesting and varied characters, excellent word-building, scripting and acting. I really enjoyed getting the hang of the combat again and learning all the new variations. It started out really tough, but Henry ended up a one man death squad after 50-60 hours or so. One of my all-time favourite games, I think, just like the first one was.

The only possible criticism would be that I was completely steam-roling everything quite a way before the end, I was drowing in money and loot that was no longer even worth picking up and I felt the urge to just push on and finish up the story. This was at just shy of 100 hours overall, mind, and hardly any games can keep me fully engaged for that long.
9.5/10

Doom the Dark ages. Finished it in 1.9 days according to game pass. I've played Doom 3 (2004), Doom (2016), Doom Eternal (2020) and finished them all. So I had to complete this.

Compared to its predecessors in 2016 and 2020 its more fun, less puzzles and less jumping challenges. Upgrading the weapons, your shield and your flail (other items) is a lot better this time around with more variety. It can seem a bit too complex at first but eventually you get the hang of it in combat.

There is only like 1 or 2 main bosses, the rest just help you max out your armor/health/ammo. Not sure about this, might have been better to add a few more bosses possibly.

Secrets are quite fun to find and easy mostly.

Solid 8.5/10 . Nice to finish a game in a few weekends, and thats the best part tbh. Too many games thesedays require so many hours, Doom dark ages is a quick blast. Need more of these.

Ive been tempted by this. I tried the one from 2016 but didn't get very far with it for some reason. Is it fairly linear? Or are you off doing random things in a random order?

It's pretty simple really, theres 22 levels. You start off with a gun, and by the 5th or 6th chapter or maybe slightly further on you get most of the weapons. get better slowly, not difficult at all. unless you set it to nightmare.

each level has a mission and you fight your way through various hordes of demons to complete it.

its on gamepass so if you have that you dont need to spend a penny or if you have a ps5 with ps+ sub you can stream it for a couple of hours.

Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars 9/10

I started the game in around 1999 and never finished it.

Finally finished it in 2026

Absolute delight of a game and I actually miss it now I've finished it. It's such a relaxing game to play. Looking forward to 2 reforged!

Guns of Fury 9/10

Been getting into old school 2d retro games recently and this one looked fun.

One of the most addictive games I've ever played, could not put it down.

Banging, memorable soundtrack and huge metroidvania style levels. Highly recommended if you're into retro 2d side scrollers!

Space Marine 2 5/10

Arggh one of the most boring shooters I've ever played. Really regret buying this.

The graphics are beautiful but that's about it.
Gameplay is clunky, story is boring, enemies are boring. Extremely linear and repetitive. No idea what the hype was all about.

I remember playing that back in the day.
20 years... Crazy how time flies.

Totally agree. It was so tedious after the first few hordes. Incredibly repetitive. A shame as I was expecting great things and like the setting.

Don't be surprised if you're a bit down on playthrough 2, as it gets a bit samey.

Things really pick up when you get to the end of that.
Finished playthrough 2! I actually really enjoyed it still - had enough side quests I didn't complete, and was still new enough. I like the hacking!

Just started playthrough 3 and got enraged by the virus part! Picking it up again today :)

Have you never played Doom II? It's a must in my book. From a different era of gaming (1994), you can't aim up and down, you can't jump and the graphics are obviously of their time. But it terms of sheer playability and more importantly, repeat playability, it's right up there with the best of all time IMO.

I just finished chapter 1 of Cleared Hot. It's early access and only took me 3 hours but it's brilliant if you enjoyed the Strike games - Desert, Jungle, Urban, Nuclear.

Thoroughly recommended. My only complaint really is that I bought the Cobra helicopter and a few weapons and then never felt the need to change my loadout.
