The last thing you bought purely after seeing an advert for it.?

I don't know about buying it solely because of the advert because I did a lot of research afterwards to make sure it's what I wanted but I saw an advert for the samsung galaxy note 10.1 which made me want one.

As I said, it wasn't the only factor that made me buy one but if it weren't for the advert I probably wouldn't have.

Probably a film trailer, I can't remember the last time that I actually looked at an advert and thought "I must have that!".
Not sure if desensitised to advertising, or it's so good I don't notice it.

ITT: People who say they're not influenced by advertising, all while posting on a shop's forum using their brand name computers.

Sorry but no matter what you say you're affected by advertising either conciously or subliminaly.

It depends on the product, for more expensive items I will go looking around for reviews. However for cheap items, mainly food snacks and soft drinks, if I see an advert for a new product and then see it in a shop I will buy it and try it.

Typically I get annoyed with adverts, but recently saw a ton of Bombardier adverts with Rik Mayall

Picked up 4 bottles to try it out, that got me thinking. This is the first time I've consciously bought something after seeing an advert for it.

What's your last one?

(haven't tried it yet as I've finished a round of meds)
lol I have seen those ads countless times as I watch a lot of Dave...never once ocurred to me it was rik mayall :o

I'd hazard a guess most people here don't have "brand name" computers and custom build.

I disagree with you, I don't impulse buy or go off advertisements, I research my purchases. It's pretty simple right? Want a computer, find the components, performance vs. value or splurge out on the best stuff.
I'm sure there's plenty of other people who are the same.

Unlike regular jane and joe who have to be hand-held and walk into purple shirt shops (am I doing this right?).

so how do you decide what components to buy? do you buy a Logitech mouse or an e-machines one? Do you buy a Nvidea graphics card or a ningjong one? Where do you buy your parts from - OcUK or Dave's custom PCs.
It's all about brand perception, there's no escaping it.

I have yet to buy something purely on the strength of an advert.

Reviews and research. People who build custom PCs aren't the type of people who just go for a brand name. Also OCUK and "Dave's Custom PC" are essentially the same really, it's not like dealing with Coke vs Pepsi.

OCUK and "Dave's Custom PC" are not essentially the same, if the product costs the same at both places you will go with the one that you have heard the best things about.

Brands with a big marketing budget will send their products to more magazines/websites than companies without a big budget, and get more exposure.
Also if Company A spends $x,000 a month in adverts on a website/magazine then obviously that site/mag is going to a) always review their product, b) not give a bad review.

And of course brands pay people to go on independant review sites and forums and post positive reviews all the time.

PR and marketing is inescapable, even if you have adblock on and stick to independant reviews (is there such a thing?) you will read opinions of people who didn't do those things.

What a load of rubbish :p

It's called doing research on the most appropriate item for your needs, rather than buying what you're told to.
