Yeah you can, just get away from the light pollution and wait for the new moon. Sailing in the Atlantic you see it beautifully, as you do in mountain areas in Europe - but out on the ocean it feels so close you can almost touch it. You can literally see the streak and concentration of stars above you. It's awe inspiring.
Right out in the middle of nowhere in Cumbria (lake district) it's possible to see all the colours of the spiral arms, down side is you have to either live there, or hope for a clear night!
Yeah that's what I meant. Hmm, might go out on a clear night and see if I can see it from the area infront of my house as it's pitch black. Not much light pollution. I've always wanted to see it, looks beautiful in the videos.
Oh god yes. I have been out and it has cast shadows on the ground! Was an awesome night. You definately have the correct time of year to go looking for it. Beautiful skies at the moment.
Just keep watching over an hour and actually look at the stars. You will see them move around.
Living on the outskirts of town, I've only ever seen it once. Just a faint smudge across the sky. I did have to get out of the direct glare of street lighting and let my eyes adjust for a few minutes. Cold night though, so didn't stay out in the garden for long.
