The "More money than sense" test

Will be upgrading from my Q6600 to SB. Not sure whether to go i5 or i7 though.

I will benefit as I play an awful lot of FSX which is mega cpu intensive. If these possible speeds of 5Ghz prove doable then it will be a good investment and will probably last me 2 years minimum.

Why is that? . . . is it because you perhaps were looking forward to playing with SB and the thread title implies you have no sense because your thinking of buying something for no sensible reason, performance you don't need, features you won't use but simply for something to play with?

I'm sure people have their reasons and it might not always be purely based on performance

It's true . . . there are many utterly sensible reasons to upgrade your PC which are not based on performance . . . I mean one could just have chronic upgraditus and just upgrade to get rid of the itch? . . . one could upgrade because its a good bit of e-slong to wab all over the forums . . .

Some people may have a problem with other people wiping their ****** with £50 notes but if your minted and it makes sense then why the hell not I say! :D

It's the reason I change my mobile phone at the end of each contract to a new expensive phone that has features I wont use

Why is that? . . . because your too stupid to get a good job that lets you easily afford all the latest technology or because your really smart and have a top job that lets you easily afford all the latest technology but you haven't found a use for the performance or features yet? . . . or something else? . . . it's not quite clear to me what you mean exactly? :p

You can never say never, but I seriously doubt I'll bother upgrading to SB. As things stand my 4ghz i7 does everything I need it to and more, so it'll probably just be gpu upgrades (I've only just changed my gpu as well :p). I'll probably give Ivy Bridge a look though.
 
Going from an i7 9xx to a Sanddybridge would be silly. There's been a couple benchmarks surfacing in the last few days and in most benchmarks it is on par or slightly (3-5%) better than an equally clocked i7. There are some gaming benchmarks with big gains (about 10-15%) but that's only because of the more aggresive turbo.... for overclockers Sandybridge just isn't worth it if you already have an i5/i7, the only benefit I can see is higher overclocking ceilings and lower power.

I would wait till either the 22nm die shrink of Sandybridge (which will be Ivybridge) or Haswell...
 
IF the OP means going fome Socket 1366 to 2011 (SB), then thats still at least half a year off, its the mainstream SB thats coming in jan.

But like most, i'll stick with my 920, for quite some time, matter of fact the only time i even load the OC profile i have these days is when i know im doing a lot of encoding type stuff, other times its sat at stock lol.

So for me personally i won't even consider a major upgrade until Ivy bridge is here, Or AMD's equivalent at that time.

If people are idiots then sure, but you make it sound like Sandybridge has a huge performance gain over current i7 chips, it simply does not. Benchmarks are out on various sites already, it isn't good end of.
 
There will always be those people with a lot of money/prepared to spend all their spare money who want to be using the highest end components whether it's for their own satisfaction knowing they have something that's 'the best' or 'newest', alternatively it could be somebody who's obssessed with benchmarking who wants higher numbers.

If you look at it realistically, there's never a need to upgrade unless your computer isn't doing as it should. But if I had loads of money to blow, I would probably buy the latest parts without thinking much about it.
 
Thinking of upgrading, but then I was thinking of upgrading to 69xx and 5xx from my 5870, and the incremental performance increase hasn't been worth it, so I'm thinking it might be the same with Sandy Bridge. Although I'm personally better off than I've ever been, I just can't justify wasting money on computer parts nearly as much as I used to :(

No, the phone you still have to pay around £200 for because I don't pay a big enough monthly fee but I still want the bestest new phone.

Unfortunately it'd be the too stupid option in my case, but generally I don't think it's nice to judge someone based on how successful they are professionally (or how lucky they are financially).
 
If people want to change well that’s their right ? I have an i7 920 and it runs very hot .I have it oc'ed to 3.36 atm but any higher and 2 of the cores start to get really hot .It is also the DO version and I have tried resetting it ,reapplying the thermal paste and also different cpu coolers ,all to no avail and don’t tell me I don’t know what I am doing ? My first computer was a 486 Intel which ran at 50 mhz and I also studied computer information systems at university .
I also like the look of the new EFI bios that comes on sandy bridge boards ,I am hoping that it will significantly increase boot times and the fact that you can use a mouse in it also appeals to me .I think that any upgrade is a personal choice and well saying that people have more money than sense totally negates peoples other reasons for changing .It also presumes that people are wrong to change and well their not ,some people can’t afford it ,some people are too tight to spend the money and some people are happy with their machines performance .I will see what the reviews say after its launched and I’ll make up my own mind then .
