The Motorola Defy

Edited to add its now £260 including free delivery on Amazon.
That's quite annoying actually, I paid £310 for mine only three weeks ago. I'm having problems with the wi-fi on it, it's slow and unstable, but other than that, I like the phone so far.

Edit: Forcing my router to use 802.11g mode only seems to have vastly improved browsing on the Defy. I have another 802.11n router somewhere, so I'll set it up and test the Defy with it to see if I can determine where the problem lies.

Still not got it yet. City Link haven't even managed to collect it apparently so its going to be Tuesday at the earliest.!

Understandable though with all this white stuff knocking about.

Had exactly the same thing with my Galaxy S, had to force my router to .11g and turn .11n off. Simply could not get a stable connection with it enabled.

Finally got it today and have to day I'm very very impressed.

Feels nice in the hand, it feels quick and once you've got rid of the MotoBlur rubbish for Launcher Pro its a lovely device.

Picked up satellites in about 3 secs today indoors which is a lot more than can be said for my old Galaxy S.

What I didnt know though was that its got a PowerVR SGX530 GPU onboard which was a nice surprise at this price bracket.

Build quality is very sturdy but I'm not going to test to see if its waterproof just yet..:p

I watched this review of it, looks like a nice phone but it's immediately apparent how slow the Motorolla customisations make the phone. It's far more jerkier doing animations and things that are otherwise butter smooth even on a bone stock Desire, heck even the HTC Wildfire type of handset!

LauncherPro that biatch as soon as but even then some of the other transitions seemed jerky too.

Get root tbh if/when it's available and flash :D

Mines already rooted Khaaan.

Z4root works perfectly on it though its not available on the market any more. I got it from xda.

And you are deffo right about the motor blur lag. Makes you wonder why they even bother surely they can see its laggy before release?

They milestone overclock app is currently being worked on to be defy compatible so hopefully 1.4ghz overclocks should be easy as its the CPU that's in the 1.2ghz Droid X.

All the lag is down to Motorola's stupid widgets killing the cpu, not the ugly launcher. Overall smoothness was comparable to my Desire without them running in the shop. LauncherPro is a must though :)

Edit:
ManCuBuS have you removed any of the bloat apks yet?

heck even the HTC Wildfire type of handset!

Surprisingly, it's the same physical size as the Wildfire and almost the same price too.

Should be much higher than that, no? I have my original Milestone running at 1.2ghz and it's clocked at 550mhz... or are these new procs not as good for OCing?

Nah not yet but I'll get on with that tonight.

I was talking about safe overclocks :D
Would've thought 1.6ghz is do-able but we'll see.

Still not missing my SGS one bit.

1.2ghz on the milestone is perfectly safe! I've had it sitting on that for daily usage for about 6 months. I'm assuming the fact my camera doesn't work anymore is an unrelated failure that I can't be bothered to get fixed :p

I'm back!

Going to order this phone from amazon today. I got a new job where I work on industrial sites and in the office. This phone seems ideal.

Woth all the motorolo bloat it's laggy?

How do I remove all the crap and make it sexy?

PS: Never owned a smartphone b4 hehe

I've had mine for a few days now, here's my initial thoughts (will post a few pics + a desire/iPhone/HD7 comparison later)

First of all software.

Motoblur is truly dreadful. Not just bad but shockingly bad. 5 minutes after turning it on I thought they'd sent me a resistive screen/200 Mhz/48Mb LG cookie, circa 2007. (T-Mobiles demo model must've had everything stripped out)
How can anyone, from junior software engineer to boardroom executive, think they're doing a good job is beyond me.
For the average person motobloat will turn Android into an old build of Symbian, so stay clear if you don't like fiddling around with your phone or want a nice/easy introduction to Andriod (SenseUI is on a completely different level)

There are a few saving graces.

The standard multi touch keyboard is one of the best and you get Swype.
DLNA is a nice addition for media streaming.
Inbuilt battery profiles and data counter.
There's wifi hotspotting too (standard on 2.2 but makes 2.1 more bearable)

...that's about it. Oh, the music/video/FM player is ok but its completely outclassed by powerAMP and the rest.

Luckily the hardware is great and once launcherPro and your fav apps are installed normal service is resumed (with minor lag from all those bloat process you can't properly close)
The screen is a decent IPS LCD. Sharp, bright and great colours. It would've been up there with the iPhone 4 if there was less depth between the panel and glass. Certainly better than standard/super LCDs currently floating around.
Love the small form factor too. Can't wait to root, remove the bloat and overclock!

The XDA defy forum is a good place to start.

No customs ROMs yet. (Paul @ ModaCo has been playing around with one :D, so here's hoping for stock gingerbread :)) Just using LauncherPro is smooth enough for most uses tbh.

I'm now rooted and overclocked :) (z4root 1.3 and Milestone overclock)

Currently running the standard Droid X clocks (1Ghz/56vsl)

Quadrant: 1300
Neocore: 45fps
SunSpider (using xScope): 11000

All on 2.1

This thing flys! (can't wait for stock 2.2/2.3 running @ 1.4Ghz )

Even if it cannot be "hacked". Is it still a good phone?

Can uninstall the motoblur crap?

Can I have custom icons and make it look sexy?

This phone could last me years or at worst a nice stop gap to iphone5 or Android 3.0

Yes it is good. I don't own one but it is good. You can get rid of the Moto stuff by installing Launcher Pro I believe.

Well ordered it for £253 delivered. I hope it's twice as good as the San Fransisco I was looking at :D

I also got a 16GB Micro SDHC card as I have assumed I will need one?

Fairly good price that. Hardware wise the Defy sports a 800mhz processor compared to the San Fran's 600mhz and is also overclockable supposedly. I don't think you will see a huge difference other than a slightly better version of Android (none of this Orange **** although I guess it's easily removable) and also a tough as nails body and much better camera/video. Stock android is generally faster, cleaner and nicer than any addition like Motoblur or the Orange carp.
