The Motorola Defy

Can uninstall the motoblur crap?

Not fully atm but you can get rid of most bloat apps (by rooting/faffing) and use a different home screen launcher etc, so it's almost non existent.

Can I have custom icons and make it look sexy?

Check out the mobile desktop thread. Loads of sexy home screens there, you can do anything you want on Android + you can use live wallpapers too.

Compared to the iPhone. Not the best pic (overexposed on the Defys bright screen) but you get the idea. just trying out small widgets/icons... going back to the standard 4 rows etc soon :p

Even if it cannot be "hacked". Is it still a good phone?

Hell yeah. (Hmm, maybe getting any HTC Desire variant or iPhone might be a better introduction to fully featured smartphones? Both offer a seamless UI experience without out the hassle of trying to remove a dumb Amazon mp3 store app :p)

Is that likely to have any impact on the device lifespan, and perhaps more likely, what does that do to battery life?

Well I'm using SetCPU to set the CPU to 300mhz when the screen is off & 1200mhz when in use.

From a full charge this morning:

Made 25mins of calls.
Sent 2 txts & 4 e-mails
Browsed for 10mins over 3G
Ran Quadrant twice
Data is constantly synced.

Currently battery is at 60%.

The standard Droid 2 global is clocked at 1.2Ghz with an identical core, so it's not pushing the chip at all. Overclocking gives you the ability to fine tune the voltages to your chip too, so if anything your improving lifespan ;)

I've gone back to 1Ghz@48vsel (max) until 2.2/Flash. It still hits 1250 in quadrant but using less power than the stock 800Mhz :) With lower vsel ratings for 300/600Mhz scaling battery life is just amazing.

Anyone got the earpiece/speaker problem?
Was really considering this device until that issue appeared quite common on a number of forums :(

Not had a thing go wrong with mine yet. Really is a superb device.

I'm sure if I was to check various forums you would find equally the same amount of problems with most other handsets.

^ Haha awesome! It's a proper little gem this phone :)

Warning: Don't install the latest firmware, JRDNEM_U3_2.51.1. You can't root or flash back to the older version.

Not me and I've been hammering the headphone jack all the time. Maybe an early batch of EU phones? I wouldn't worry about it.

So got it overclocked to 1ghz@56, how do I setup scalling?

Here's the guide. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=880851 The milestone overclock dev says he's working on a GUI for it too.

Shame Motorola has to install a load of **** on it. Why do operators/companies INSIST on tampering with Android? Oh yeah, to make money. :(

It's easy enough to remove the offending apks once rooted *cough*Motoblur social services*cough*
The barebones of blur is fairly decent and mines totally lag free now. (not including full on multitasking... but that's my choice now ;))

How's everyone finding the 854x480 "widescreen" proportions? At first it seemed too long/thin but it's really starting to grow on me.

Been to view this handset in the stores, please can I clarify: The headset appears to be a pin type connector, not a 3.5mm jack, is there an adaptor required or was I just viewing a dummy model in the stores? Cheers

How do you update the operating system? There is a option in Settings, About phone and System updates. It checks for system updates on the internet?
