Been playing blue dragon, and drive has been making some funny noises,

Now 20 hours into the game, I get the first dreaded 'disk is unreadable, please clean error' despite the DVD not having a single scratch on it

Now its giving me the same error every half an hour or so :(

Is there a way of fixing this at all? It seems either the DVD drive is dying,... or its just dirty? 360 is out of warentee but its not been opened so I doubt MS will do anything?

Its currently verticle and has been for a while, will horizontal make a difference?

From my experience no, it doesn't make a difference being vertical or horizontal. If you have a Samsung or Hitachi drive, which it sounds like you do, I would get it replaced. It completely ruined my Forza 2 experience and I had to sell the game regrettably.

You could try and replace the drive if you look around on the net I suppose.

the only way to fix it is to get it replaced. luckily i had the same prob for months but mine was still in warranty and ms replaced it with new one.

Got same problem with mine, seems ok on certain games and does it all the time on others, mines past warranty. Though I should have sent it back before.. kinda waiting for a RROD so I can send it back and hope they send a new console lol. Then again waiting for proper confirmation that new ones are quieter so I can buy a replacement.

I've had no errors on mine but my gf came upstairs last night whilst I was playing PGR4 saying it sounded like the washing machine on full spin... and that was her sat downstairs with the TV on  The thing vibrates my desk so hard you can feel it through the floor :(

I have nowhere else to post this, but on the subject of 360 drives. My 1st 360 which I got back from repair yesterday I have finally compared with my other 360. The older one is much quieter (18 months old) compared to the newer one (1 month old)

I thought that was odd.

The new one is BenQ and I think the old one is a Samsung drive.

My drive packed in on Saturday :( Mine's a Hitachi and the console's out of warranty.

I did ring M$ and they wanted £59.91 to repair it, and it would take a while. The guy on the phone gave me a (rather comical) lecture that I shouldn't buy Xbox's second hand.

Would like to echo spoonjaffa's request for a guide to replacement please.

My DVD drive gave up at the weekend. Gutted. Suddenly started making a rather nasty grinding sound to which i immediately ejected the disc expecting to see it covered in scratches, but fortunately it was fine.

My xbox was out of warranty and I had previously opened it to upgrade the cooling, so I opened it up again and had a look to see if it was a simple fix. Turns out that a small magnet that sits in the middle of the DVD drive spindle and clamps the disc in place had broken and fallen out, and as a result the disc was loose and was slipping when the spindle rotated, causing the grinding noise. It looked like it was pretty weak to begin with and is possibly a common fault with the drives (mine is a Hitachi by the way). A quick bit of superglue on the magnet and it was back working just like new :D. Chuffed as the other option would be to have to purchase a replacement drive and swap out the firmware boards. I suggest that if anyone else has this problem with a Hitachi drive and they are out of warranty and happy opening the xbox, than it could be simple superglue fix rather than buying a whole new drive, or even xbox

thats brilliant metallic - any chance of a bit more detail on where exactly you glued please?

PiKe - Re the POT fix - I've read about cutting 2mm squares of elastic band and gluing them to parts of the drive, is this what you mean ? also do you think you could describe where abouts to put these please?

I think i'd be happy enough opening the box, i can't see as I have anything to lose now.

Have a look at this image here. In the middle of the black spindle is a small silver circular magnet. When the drive closes this attracts a metal clamp that sits in the top of the drive case and holds the disc in place. This had simply come away from the spindle and was stuck on the clamp and no longer holding the disc. Just glue it back into its hole in the spindle and and it should work fine again. Providing that is the problem of course.

This is providing that you drive is a Hitachi as I am unaware of the situation with the other drive models.

cheers metallic - I think my problem with my hitachi drive may well be what you describe....I've just done some digging and one guide at xbox-scene details attaching a square piece of 3mm x 3mm plastic somewhere on the laser housing (i'm not sure on where abouts exactly) like this :

I'm not sure what issue that solves though ....

Mines out of normal warentee but still in the 3 years warentee, is there any chance of blagging them to repair it? Or will they instantly say no?

I have no clue on how to take a 360 apart, and most likely will balls it up, sooner have someone do it for me, but prices seem quite astromonical :(?
