The "New Gear/Willy Waving" thread

Let us know how you get on. I am tempted by the DS412+ myself.

What HDs have you selected for them?

WD Reds ?

I just went for 3TB WD Greens, I have two spare WD Greens 3TB drives here so if one goes I can swap it out quick enough. The 412+ is on a competitors site for cheaper than the 413, but it's a 'supplier'. OcUK have the 413 currently with 12TB (unsure of which HDDs) for a smidge under £760. I paid just under £800 because I selected my own drives.

I wouldn't think WD Greens will blow up because you use them in the NAS, people have been using them for years before Reds came out. It's more like Reds are designed for NAS so it is better suited.

I have a mix of WD Greens Seagate, Hitchachi and WD Reds in mine. They all happily spin together.

But if I were buying new HDDs now for a NAS, I would go for Reds.

I'v had trouble with greens. Apparently not the most reliable. I've moved to 2.5" drives now as they are much quieter and don't have to worry about heat etc. from not having fans.

From my research into NASs I agree with Janesy!

I'd pickup a few external 3TB Toshiba Canvio drives (£80), break open the enclosures and put the drives into your NAS. Toshiba use the well known and desirable relabelled Hitachi 5K3000 drives in these..... Plus these external enclosures are a good £10+ cheaper than buying the drives on their own (miss out on warranty though).

Read somewhere about Netflix using these badboys in their servers and they are still regarded as one of the best HDDs out there with excellent performance and reliability from only a 5700rpm drive.

Which one would that be? The 200-400 with the built in extender adaptor?

Yeah. Long white one. Think it was only just released a month back or so?

Nope, i don't see that range, so it would be a waste of money for me to buy that.

Plus it will no doubt bring my insurance premium through the roof !

Shame. No motorsport stuff or such?

Nope, no motorsport, same goes with no wild life, no planes, no moon. (The caveat here is that I've not shot any of them, so I can't categorically say I don't like them, they just don't interest me enough to go out want to shoot them)

I like things closer, people in general. Nothing too close either as I don't particularly shoot macro either, although I do have a macro lens.

Basically I like things you see with your general field of vision, perhaps a little wider and a little zoom either way.

This has just arrived :D

I got an email from 7dayshop the other day about a cheapo monopod/walking stick thing. I thought what the hell, it's only a fiver. It's just arrived and it's well worth the dosh. Seems nice and sturdy, has various attachments and has a little compass on top :)

Can't fault it for £5.

Posted this in GD but I may as well post it here too.

Got it Monday, still waiting to give it a proper trial. Main use will be video but I plan on getting into the photography side of it too!

Can you let me know how you get on with the tamron?.. ive been debating it for a while now

Will do. I had a quick play with it last night, seems pretty good! The VC is a bit weird as it shakes through the viewfinder slightly but that is something you get used to. I'll stick up a few pics once I have some worth looking at! :D
