The new Orange Android phone (San Francisco) £99...but a Question??

Guys,

I've put on recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img through the fastboot folder/ followed the instructions.

Is it just a case of now transferring over alpha3-update-modacocustomrom-blade-kitchen-unsigned.zip (it is for TFT SF's) and installing the .zip when booting up with the -vol button/power button help down method.

There is an option to reset/wipe to factory settings, and another to clear the cache. Page 53 suggests doing a wipe before hitting install and then clearing the cache afterwards. Have I understood this correctly? I managed to backup the ROM ok, and there is now an option to install the update.zip but I am guessing that is the original ROM as I haven't transferred over the alpha 3 yet.

Sorry for going on and on.

Any help would be great.

Do a wipe/factory reset before installing. Once installed clear the cache to prevent boot problems. Once loaded up carry out a few re-starts of the phone..

You need to copy the intact zip file of your rom to the micro sd card for installation.

Once clockwork recovery is installed, everything else is simple.

Any backups you make will appear in a clockwork-mod directory on the SD card, you can copy these off onto your PC for safe keeping if required.

When changing between major version of android (e.g. éclair to froyo) then it is best to ensure you clear all caches and reset to factory defaults.

When performing an update then the standard option is using an update.zip file located in the root of the SD card. If you have a differently named zip file, or it is not located in the SD card root folder then choose the one of the other options where you can select a specific zip file to update from.

Thanks MOOGLEYS & Evilpaul, that worked a treat.

Now to restart it a few times, it certainly looks a lot better without all of Orange's branding on it.

I really appreciate the help.

Hi guys, I've managed to unlock the san fran ok but really can't get my head around installing the updated android os. Anyone out there who lives nr manchester who could help me out?

Kept harping on to my dad about getting a san fran. He called me earlier asking where to get unlock codes :D He's technically minded but I think a lot of android features will still go over his head.

Should see him Saturday so hopefully see if he got a TFT or OLED. I assume he bought his in Norwich.

reserved the last one at Argos in Stafford so i'll collect it in the morning after my nightshift! Ive read through this whole thread and 99% of it has gone over my head, so it could be a steep learning curve! Certainly an upgrade to my Nokia 2730!

Just bought one of these up on the bay for £120 Inc rmsd postage brand new with oled screen :). Its another upgrade for my girlfriends tmobile pulse that is a bit more sluggish and occasionally problematic than I thought it would be (e.g. will randomly stop receiving texts every now and then until you wipe the dalvik cache... which she can't do herself). From what I've seen... this just "works" and is actually designed to run 2.1 where as the pulse is struggling a little. Also a bit more like my N1, the pulse looks cheap inin comparison.

Theres loads of posts above from Moogleys detailing how...I'll try and post something thats a bit easier to read due to the multiple posts things are spread across :p

Installing Android etc:

Download these three files:

Fastboot, ClockworkMod (2.5.0.9), and your desired ROM - Modaco 2.2 in my case

You may also need these files downloaded prior to install when you plug the phone in via USB:
http://www.easy-share.com/1912504577/usb_driver.zip
http://android.modaco.com/content/zte-blade-blade-modaco-com/322611/official-zte-usb-drivers/

Step by step install instructions

* Download 2.5.0.9 ClockworkMod Recovery for ZTE Blade
* Download fastboot if you do not have it already.
* Turn off your phone and take out the battery. Unplug the phone from the PC / charger.
* Replace the battery and turn the phone back on with 'volume up' held. The device will stay at the 'green android' screen.
* Plug the phone into the PC.
* Extract the contents of the fastboot zip file into a directory on the C:/ drive
* From a command prompt (at the directory containing these new files!) run 'fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img' (subsituting fastboot-mac' or 'sudo fastboot-linux' as required)
* When this finishes, from the command prompt run 'fastboot-windows reboot' (again substituting 'fastboot-mac' or 'sudo fastboot-linux' as required)
* Done!

-----------------------

Run the phone with Clockwork Mod on to see if its actually working still

THEN:

  • Put the desired ROM file (Modaco 2.2) onto the SD Card WITHOUT extracting the contents, leave it in a zip file
  • Turn the phone off, then turn it on while holding down the -Volume button down - The green Android should flash Blue
  • You should now be in the Clockwork mod 'gui' as such...use the following commands to naigivate:
Navigation in the recovery image as follows:

* Volume Up / Down to move between options
* Home key to select an option
* Back key to go back

I seriously suggest backing up the original O/S / ROM here, just incase something goes wrong.

  • You now need to select the 'wipe' option to wipe the phone
  • Once done, select the option to install a .ZIP file from an SD card, then select the desired .zip file
  • Once completed, select the option to clear the cache on the phone - Once completed, reboot the phone using the option on the menu
  • You will see theg reen Android, it will then chage to the 'Modaco' image (If using the Modaco ROM)...This will last a couple of minutes, it should then load up into the new O/S / ROM

Think thats everything...I'll read it in a sec and see if it makes sense :)

Might have to take the wifes one back, her power button on the top of the phone seems a bit dodgy only works sometimes only had it a week and a bit, so im hoping they still have some OLED ones in stock as thats what she has at the minute. but apart from that they are great little phones

Just 1 question from me.. if the fastboot file was for example in the root "C:/" would I type "C:/ fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img" into the command prompt? May seem an easy question but I'm not quite sure what you meant by "From a command prompt (at the directory containing these new files!)".

Thats nearly it, but its more like
Fire up command prompt (I did it with admin rights)
cd \ (return)
fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img (return)

note you "/" was the wrong way round :)

for installinging 2.5.0.9

If you are installing using Windows 7 32/64 bit then depress the shift key (far left of keyboard immediately above the CTRL key) silultaniously right click on the folder and choose "open command window here" Then wipe the following in:
fastboot-windows flash recovery recovery-clockwork-2.5.0.9-modaco-r2-blade.img
press enter
and for rebooting

fastboot-windows reboot
press enter

Picking this up form Argos later, what's the best update to install and run on this phone? I'm a total noob on these Smart Phones because this is my 1st one!

Also, would I be able to run games like MAME stuff on there for some retro gaming? Stuff like Streets Of Rage and whatnot?

Got one from the Orange store in Inverness yesterday, I was surprised they had them in!

Just took it out to charge and I must say it looks fantastic. I much prefer its styling over my Magic. :( I'm starting to wish I bought this for myself now, haha.

Once it's fully charged, I'm going to look into unlocking it and then installing Android 2.2.

How do I tell if I've got the TFT or OLED version?
