Not sure if anyone knows about this but Nvidia have decided to get in on the Mobile phone game now.

They have produced a new chip which they have named the Tegra and it is claimed that is uses 10x less power than chips at used at the moment. It will support full HD playback and the phone can even be linked to a HD TV and play its content on that. The GUI will be fully 3D graphics accelerated and the chip will also be able to support a 12mp camera.

Here is a link to Nvidias site with some concept images of 2 phones using the Tegra chip (I hope they revamp the look of the phones as not too keen on them):

And here is a guy that got to play with Nvidia's concept phone (this phone isn't going to be the phone that is released its just a demo)

The phones are due to come out sometime in the middle of 2009 and if they do what they show in that demo then this might well be my next phone.

What do you think, is this the next gen of phones to blow the current ones out of the water?

That does look very cool. However the main problem with phone technology advancing so fast is that battery technology doesn't seem to be keeping up. I'm willing to bet that the battery life on that phone could be measured in minutes rather than hours. My n95 8gb is bad enough. Then you have the G1 which is meant to have a terrible battery life.

Strange, my 8Gb has stunning battery life.

The nVidia thing looks interesting.
We could do with seeing some battery advancements though tbh.

They are already out there - ask any E71 owners. Mine lasts 5 days when I'm using it a lot, 7 days on standby. That is more than enough for anyone.

The E71 isn't a battery advantage, they all use essentially the same battery. It just has a physically bigger battery. If nokia could have sorted out the original n95 with another battery don't you think they would have done that? ;):p Battery technology has totally plateaued in lieu of every other aspect of technology.

Mine lasts about 2 days. Only negative aspect of an otherwise supurb phone. Never before have I had a phone for over a year and simply forgot how long I'd had it and not been itching for an upgrade.

Mine lasts a similar time, assuming I only turn Bluetooth on in the car. I upgraded mine to first a Storm, then an N96. I finally realised that the 8GB provided everything I needed, plus it was setup the way I wanted, so why change... I sent the N96 back and I'm happy with my 8GB again.

On topic, I wonder exactly how effective these devices will be as an actual mobile telephone - will it be an awesome screen and sod all else?

The OP quotes "They have produced a new chip which they have named the Tegra and it is claimed that is uses 10x less power than chips at used at the moment" so perhaps battery life won't be such an issue if that quote is correct.

nVidia are no doubt comparing the chip against desktop PC power consumption.

Tegra looks pretty nice but I doubt that it will be widely used. TI are still the dominant manufacturer of application processors for mobile devices and they've got products scheduled for release at the same time that are just as good.

Is it just me that thinks 2 days is a decent length of time to last on these devices? I thought most modern smartphones/pocketPC units came with MiniUSB ports, which means you are never really that far away from a power source.
I have never tested my Kaiser properly, but I got it in October last year, and can count the number of times i have had the battery die on 1 hand :) Even when i had the M5000, with a spare battery, it never got used.

I have a charger in my car, and a cable for my laptop, and one on my home PC. I have normal socket charger too which I might take with me when I travel, but I would have my laptop, so its not really required.

I don't know i like being able to go away for the weekend still use my phone properly and not have to worry about finding a suitable place to charge my phone. And still have charge to use on the way home. My E51 just pulls that off, but its because its running symbian which is easier on the battery. If symbian phones had the same massive batteries WinMo phones had they'd last forever!

Only crap thing with the battery on my N95 is a night out! Get to 4-5am and its dead if I don't fully charge it before I leave.

Which is really crap!

Is it really that hard to devolp better battery life?

Whilst my usage patterns of my N95 8Gb are mostly likely different because i get a good few days out of it with heavy usage, ive gotta agree with the latter bit. Ive had mine now bob on 12 months, and still loving it! :D.
