The OCUK Whisky (and Whiskey) review thread

That's interesting, big result to beat out all those big names. Have you tried it yet? Thoughts? Have you tried Uige or Corryvreckan before?

Sorry I was a bit slow replying.

I'm fairly familiar with Uigedail and Corryvreckan. Got a bottle of the latter on the go and have owned the former.

The Ben Brackent 22yo isn't bad at all - but it's not the greatest £45 whisky I've tried - not bad but not spectacular either. It certainly doesn't 'move' me in the way that a Lag 16 or Corryvreckan might. It's 40% and chill filtered. My guess is it might have done more for me at 43-36% and non-chill filtered.

But I guess I like a bit of peaty, smoky reek to my Islays. It's more subtle than that. If you like subtler Islays it might be worth a go. The nose isn't that powerful and it's got that Laphroaig-like medicinal quality rather than all-out fire.

This has been at my parents' for years. Finally said it and opened it.
Wasn't exactly blown away but then I'm not a massive whiskey fan.

Just looked at the RRP. Should've sold it!

Nice stuff.

Just went into the Whiskey Shop in Guildford today..

Came out with two Glencairn whiskey glasses and a "dram to share" tasting set, in which you get 10cl each of:
Ledaig 9 yo - isle of mull - tobermorie distillery - deepest colour of them, has a massive smokiness, like a BBQ. After taste has a bit medicinal, but the smoke continues.
Inchgower 6 yo - speyside - heavier nose, more wood-barrels than those below with lots more intense creamy taste. Far far longer aftertaste.
Fettercairn 6 yo - east highlands - deeper than the craig, with more taste but still not really much there - subtle.
Craigellachie 6 yo - speyside - very light taste, very little nose

So I shall be having a couple over the next few weeks :D
edit: few weeks? I lied.. adding tasting notes using one of my new glasses. From the bottom... to the top whiskey..

They're young, not as posed as in weight (Ardberg) or balanced (Bowmore) compared to older whiskies.

That Ledaig would be really really good on a finishing dram after a smoked BBQ with a rack of ribs.

As a friend of Laphroaig (aka anyone who has ever bought a bottle and registered), I've just been invited to enter the ballot for this year's Cairdeas bottling, which is a yearly limited edition they do.

It's called Madeira as its second maturation is done in seasoned Madeira hogsheads, after the 2013 Portwood edition went down so well.

I'm initially intrigued, but the £69 price tag is fairly steep. Anyone else eyeing this up, or bought a bottle of Cairdeas before?

Been trying the whiskeys one at a time each night.. (basically with 40cl that's more than enough of each!).

This time around I get a lot more taste. Perhaps it worked better with a little oxygen in the bottles and time in the glass.

Tonight is the heavy Ledaig again. :D

edit: warmed up, smell of cognac and then tasting smoke.

would love to hear about the Glendronach sauternes finish

I had a Benriach sauternes and it was superb..but its all gone and theres none left to buy at the moment!! so I need anopther to try!

I'm still trying to work out the styles and flavours of what I do and don't like at the moment.

Currently got...

Johnnie Walker Platinum
Johnnie Walker Double Black
Johnnie Walker Black
Glenmorangie Original
Dalwhinnie Winters Gold

Quite liking the JWs.

Plain old Jameson for me. Got some JW Blue Label last year from a client which tasted rather nice but in the end, not that much of an aficionado. Although I would be keen to try something that's along the same lines of Jamie.
