Are you buying a 24" M1 iMac?

I’m surprised there are a few posters on here getting the 24” when there is undoubtedly a larger more powerful version coming. The old 21.5” wasn’t exactly a huge seller with posters here.

Is the the new screen that puts this iMac in a much better position than the old one?

Over the years I’ve realised there is not much I use that would benefit from more power. I used to be about buying top spec machines and it made no meaningful difference to my usage.

The M1 with 16GB can handle raw photo editing no issues and that’s the most demanding task I use my PC for. My day job involves Office suite and cloud based software.

I prefer a smaller screen and sitting a bit closer, used a 24” LG UltraFine for a while and enjoyed it, this screen has even more resolution.

24" M1 iMac
Native: 4480 x 2520
Retina: 2,240 x 1,260
PPI: 218.73 pixels per in

24" LG UltraFine
Native: 3840 x 2160
Retina: 1920 x 1,080
PPI: 185.9 pixels per in

I think it’s fair to say it’s the screen upgrade over the old version that sold it?

The old 21.5” had a pretty rubbish screen when compared to the 27” iMac, I don’t think that will be the same case this time round. Sure it will be bigger but I doubt it’s going to offer a significant quality advantage unless they surprise us with mini led.

I wouldn't say the 21.5" was rubbish, it had the same specs as the 27" but it's just smaller. On the new iMac, 2,240 x 1,260 (retina) is very usable, a step up from 1080p which is what you usually get on 24". The 24" UltraFine is 1080p when using retina.

It’s 1080P with scaling though, that’s so much sharper than just regular 1080P which is what the old outgoing model had.

Thats what I meant by it having a comparatively poor screen to the 27” 5k iMac but the two are much closer together now.

The old 21.5" was true 4k so it scaled higher than 1080p, I made a post early comparing them:

21.5 Retina iMac

Can't wait to see more user feedback on these. So torn between one of these and a Mini and my own monitor.

What monitor would you go with that would even come close to the 4.5K on the iMac? This is what has always been difficult for me and the Mac Mini. You could pair with a 5K UltraFine, but that's almost the cost of the iMac by itself.

Love the keep it simple picture

Really interested in hearing the speakers, do you feel they are good enough to watch youtube etc or will you go for additional speakers?

Also really like than ipad stand! Do you have a link?

Yea they are good enough for media for sure.

This is the stand - https://satechi.net/products/aluminum-desktop-stand-for-ipad?variant=33573590368344

Genuine question... Do you work with paper much and does the desk actually stay that tidy?

My job doesn’t involve paper, unless I fancy taking notes in a notepad. I mostly use Apple notes.

I’ll have the odd thing on my desk throughout the day, but I generally keep it tidy like this. It’s nicer to work at a clean and tidy desk.

Ok cool, I'll keep an eye on it, thanks.

I just got a warning from CleanMyMac saying I was out of RAM, so it was a bit concerning.

If it doesn't impact speed/stability (which it hasn't yet), I will forget about it. :)

How much RAM do you have? Illustrator and Photoshop both open are pretty heavy apps.

I've got the 16GB model, so as much as possible.

Some of my colleagues have had the 24" for a few months already (because I wanted to wait for the 27" replacement) and they haven't had any issues, but they might not be multi-tasking quite as much as me.

I've found that WhatsApp likes to use a ton of memory so keep an eye on that. 16GB is fine for most uses but when you are working with a lot of files in creative apps memory can hit it's limit.

Seems Apple might not release a larger iMac according to 9to5 (https://9to5mac.com/2022/03/11/excl...no-plans-to-release-a-new-larger-screen-imac/) which is a shame, as we're looking to do an upgrade in the office later this year.

Does anyone know what Apple are likely to do with the 24" iMac come Aug/Sept? Will it likely just be a slight spec bump, use M1 Pro/Max, or will we see a new "M" processor for it?

I think we will see M2 in the iMac next. Not sure when. Don’t think they will bring the Pro or Max to the iMac, they will keep those for the Pro devices.
