****The Official 5G Home Broadband Thread**** (Three/EE/Vodafone/etc)

I'll tip my cap when driving past the local masts too :)

Some decent poles of wonder around K'ford, decent ping as well there, run and nperf test and see how it goes.. Best speeds I've seen local to me was 1.4Gbps down 120Mbps up, I only use the 5G as my backup/bond now.

Has anybody seen the Teltonika Altos? 5G / Wi-Fi 7 device in the mould of the various Huawei/ZTE tower things but it runs OpenWrt and is built in Europe. Has a telephone socket which from the docs looks like it uses the VoLTE service on whatever SIM is plugged in. Would be nice if it has eSIM support but it's an indoor unit so not the end of the world to have to put a SIM in.

UniFi 5G max in the loft, chucked my work SIM with Vodafone in to see what it's like. IIRC there is a Vodafone mast near us but the modem is pointing away from it (well, I assume so but no idea if the antenna setup is direction or not). Perfectly fine for backup broadband if my FTTP goes down.

UniFi 5G max in the loft,

Since you now own one of these, can you see what sort of cell locking, or band locking is available on it, if anything please? If you are in an area with more than one mast it'll be pretty annoying without at least one of them as an option.

There's nothing in the UI that I can see. There are a bunch of CLI options which look like they may help, but I don't know if they would be overwritten on the next provisioning cycle.

Will have to see if someone else in the wild could confirm then, would be great to integrate with the rest of the Unifi kit I have but a pointless expense if it keeps connecting to the inferior mast and bands on offer.

There's definitely stuff you can do, I haven't the faintest idea about 5G modems but got Gemini to help.

Happy to try stuff out as long as I don't brick it. :)

Long outputs so will put in spoiler.

If I have read up on the UniFi 5G Max / Outdoor, they run a Snapdragon X62 5G modem, but it does show up from Sierra Wireless

What's the best mast location site now? As I have been using cellmapper.net to get a good orientation, sadly, I think I need to put the UniFi 5G Outdoors, as the signal is still hit-and-miss in the loft, or that could be 02 or Three, which I am currently trailing

Cellmapper still has the best UK data from my experience - I do try and use it on my phones to map the area I live with up to date information. Depends on where you live how accurate it will be. You should be able to see what Cell bands you have on your local masts though, and how much bandwidth they have.

A good test to see if it is the router or the connection is run in on your phone, look at the Cell stats, and see where you are connecting to, then do the same with the router - if you end up on a different mast (eNB ID) and then do some speed test and move around your property with phone to see if it changes.

Evening all, is there any temporary option for 5g broadband as I’ve moved house and have to wait 30+ days for BT to pull the FTTP , EE have given me a temp hotspot device but it’s going to be painful with the family to live with this! Well my ears will be painful with the moaning :)

Pick up a 5G modem/router used for ~£100 and an unlimited SIM of choice for £15-30 - check coverage first where you have moved to.

I still find Cellmapper best tbh

Managed to get my outdoor ZTE MC889 set up indoors where it's performing really well.

Thinking I should have saved a few bob and just gone for the ZTE MC888! I'd like to mount out on on the roof, but I don't have a chimey

Any recommendations for indoor 5G routers, and outdoor pole mounted antennas?
I'm planning on upgrading our home broadband setup this summer to 5G. The current setup is as follows:
EE 4G connection, a 4G aerial on the chimney, connected to a Teltonika RUT 950 in the loft, connected to a zyxel GS1900 switch, which connects to the various kit and wifi routers around the house.
We generally get ~30 Mbps down and up. I'd like to upgrade to 5G to get a faster connection.
Inside, using my phone the 5G connection gets 70-80 Mbps down, 10 Mbps up. But outside it gets >100 Mbps down and ~50 up.

You will lose more signal through the antenna cables than you gain by getting an antenna up unless you're going with something highly directional. Use an outdoor modem that supports eSIM.

Our current Teltonika RUT950 is great, so I'd be happy to go with Teltonika again. Something like the OTD500 or RUTM55? Plus a PoE adapter and a small wall bracket, it seems like it will be relatively easy to install and setup.
