*** The Official ATI Radeon HD 6970 & 6950 Reviews, Discussion and Overclocking Thread ***

think theres gonna be quite a few orders cancelled for these now the reviews are out, the first 2 conclutions i read basically said buy a 570 instead

there probably will be a few cancelled orders but i'm gonna stick with the 6970. I plan on crossfiring it later, might even try tri fire. if these prices dont go silly in the new year thanks to the vat rise etc.

Hardocp review is up, usig the correct supplied driver, cards are massivly impressive. Only place I trust nowadays for a real unbiased review. 6970 trades blows with 580 for 100quid less and 6950 beats 570 in every test.
Awesome, a lot of the other reviews are crap tbh, check it out :)

but they do all their benches @ 2560x1600 which doesnt help most people, including yourself on a 22" screen

Here's my summary of just games performance, 5870 vs 6970 at 1920x1200

2560x1600 all test done.
Let me guess which card thats going to favor?
One with 2gb or one with 1280mb?
All I need is 30" Dell £800 screen and I am sorted....
1920x1080
and
1920x1200
is where these card should be compared.

Review is fail.

Only if you were gaming at 2560 res would you see 6970 being clearly superior to the GTX480 and GTX570...1920 res or lower...no...just no.

Even in overclocking this thing fails.

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/HIS/Radeon_HD_6970/32.html

"The overclocks of our card are 915 MHz core (4% overclock) and 1445 MHz Memory (5% overclock). Both overclocks are less than impressive, especially from the memory chips I expected more which are specified to run at up to 1500 MHz."

570GTX will give you a cool 850-900 on core.

The only saving grace I see for this card is xfire scaling.
Single card performance is abysmal.
6950 in xfire might be worth a shot..... for £420

I hope HardOCP are right, not sure how you work out all the other reviews are wrong and this one is right?

6970 seems like a lost cause (generally slower than/on par with GTX570, but more expensive), but 6950 MAY still have a chance to compete against 5870 and pre-overclocked GTX470, assuming it is priced at £200~£210.

Looks like AMD should kick the 6870 price back down to £170 range...

Why? You could pump out near GTX 580 performance by just some overclocking. That'll save you a lot of money.

Plus the HD 6970 shines at high resolutions, maintaining a higher FPS than the GTX 570 closing in onto the GTX 580. For people using Eyefinity or who want to play at high resolution, the HD 6970 is pretty good.

These really are just looking like refreshes performance wise, which is pretty disappointing. But at least they've dropped the price point on them, there's nothing particularly "negative" about them in their own regard, just they're really not much of an upgrade by themselves for those who have 470s and 5870s.

Crossfire wise, they are looking like upgrades though for those with singe GPUs and anyone else who didn't get a 470/5870. I can see my 5870 lasting me until the 7 series comes out though, unless I want to go crossfire, then I don't think I could miss out on some 6950 crossfire if/when they're a bit cheaper.
