**** The Official Chinese Phones Thread ****

Geekerwan has been blocked/censored in China on orders of the government after he posted a video showing that Chinese phone makers cheat in benchmarks. He shows how Chinese phones run 10% faster and use 20% less power in reviews compared to real life performance for owners

Here is a video backup due to other videos getting taken down by ccp

so he's saying we're being lied to? The phones we buy aren't as good as they say they are?

I keep changing my tune on this.

One minute I think I'll be staying with Poco and get the latest and greatest F8 Ultra (large screen size/good battery/improved support cycle),
then I find myself considering the support/security of makes like Apple/Samsung/Google, and figure why don't I go all in on a flagship which should last me many years (built-in obsolescence aside).

I've never had an Apple product and I hear they're very good, though I use a Windows desktop, so maybe that wouldn't be ideal.

honestly tin-foil hat aside and unless you need good cameras for photography, i can't see what apple/samsung/google provides that run-of-the-mill chinese phones don't provide

Has that been the case with previous releases? Example Xiaomi 14, 15, 16 ?
I had the 15 Ultra and the security patches came 2 or 3 months apart.

Yes the older models get big OS updates slower than the newer models. And 16? Was that a trick question ha.

. It's only Google that really does a stellar job of OS and security updates. Samsung are usually on point with security updates.

i don't do hardcore gaming on my phone and honestly i don't think i can tell the last few android updates from each other without looking at the version number lol

in the last 6 years i've had the s10 lite, s23, s24 and the poco f8 pro...i definitely value battery life the most
samsung has always been on point with the security updates on the s23/s24, jury is still out with my poco and we'll see what xiaomi does

I'm struggling to see much material difference between the Xiaomi 17 Utlra and the Honor Magic 8 Pro?

Marginally differnt camera setups and the Honor has a slightly higher DPI and bigger battery. Not sure how they are squaring a £400 price difference.

I find trouble to find any difference android update to update other than the number so not fussed how quickly updates arrive, security one is important I guess , moved away from Xiaomi price is high my current goto is OnePlus which so far has impressed me really liking oxygen and for someone that camera isn't big deal and not like they are terrible it's a good match for me with rest of the spec and considering the cost

I'll find out on Tuesday, my son has got the Honor Magic 8 Pro, and my 17 Ultra will arrive then, we'll give them a good head to head comparison.

The price difference is probably because the 17 has just been released, and the Magic 8 has been out for a little while.

They have similar rrps right?
If you're savvy enough to secure and stack all the discounts you can grab the 512GB model for sub £850.

I'm not really a fan of either Honor or Xiaomi offerings this year. However a few details stand out on why the Xiaomi costs more.

LEICA grade lenses and tuning. More RAM. Cutting edge main and telephoto sensors with LOFIC and moving lenses.

Also on the topic of DPI... the Xiaomi uses an RGB stripe oled panel whereas Honor uses pentile so the Xiaomi will be as good if not sharper.

I agree security and bug fix updates are the most important to me.

We did indeed get an absolute blinder of a deal on the OnePlus 15 at launch. Great phone. Hardware and software is excellent and the battery life is just leagues ahead of the top 3.

Annoyingly it seems like you also have to use the Xiaomi charger if you want the full charging speeds. My 140w Anker doesn't negotiate with the Poco phone, so I get 60w max. Using the bundled 90w charger with the phone gets the full speed. Must be some form of proprietary charging or handshake going on. That's a shame.

Does anyone know if the 17 Ultra comes with a pre fitted screen protector? I've still got the original on my Magic 5 Pro nearly 3yrs on! :)
