**** The Official Chinese Phones Thread ****

17 Ultra arrived today, unfortunately I'm between nightshifts, so I'll get it all set up on Wednesday or Thursday.

It looks and feels lovely in the hand, but I'm too tired to mess about with it...

17 Ultra arrived today,

Mines been despatched today, but I only ordered this morning. I spent too long trawling over reviews etc. I wanted the blingy green, but that went out of stock, so a black one is on the way. Don't suppose it matters, as all my phones go in a case. My 14 Ultra is going for trade in.

The green is gorgeous in the flesh, it's so nice that I've ordered a couple of clear cases for it! :)

I traded in my Magic 5 Pro and got £362 through Amazon.

I've been devouring plenty of reviews over the last few days,
and I 'think' I've narrowed it down to these (at the moment :D):

Oppo Find X9 Pro
OnePlus 15/15R
Poco X8 Pro Max (not released yet)
Poco F8 Ultra

personal opinion, but for high-end money i would only opt for a phone that contains a snapdragon
exynos and mediatek just don't "feel" as snappy as a snapdragon...at least in my experience anyway

The Dimensity 9400+ in my 15T Pro is plenty snappy enough, what was the last Mediatek chip you used?

nothing recent in terms of phone, the last one was an LG (can't remember the model) that i used briefly in between my nexus 4 and 5 - also incidentally made by LG but both had snapdragons
...so...over a decade ago

What are Xiaomi like for updates? I had one years back that was pretty rubbish in that regard. I'm massively tempted by the 17 Ultra.
I had the 15 Ultra. The android 16 update landed in late Oct 2025 and security updates come every 2 or 3 months.
^this

my Poco F8 pro was shipped with the november security updates, just had the january security update a week ago...so, at least for the newer phones it's been every 2-3 months

I'm still really impressed with my Honor Magic 8 Pro. The photographs are superb and the phone feels very fast and responsive. The battery is a beast too.
Just had the Feb security update at the start of March too. Allegedly 7 years of security updates! (Not that I'll have the phone that long)

I can't really put my finger on it, but the Xiaomi 17 Ultra is my 7th Xiaomi phone over the years, (mi 4, the first) and I really think they've nailed it.

It feels amazing in hand, super fluid to use, and the screen is excellent. And obviously the cameras take great pictures too.

I'd consider myself a power user, it's constantly in use for work (I can't be bothered carrying a second phone) android auto is used wirelessly throughout the day, while streaming my YouTube music. As well as using my work app for clients. And here we are a couple days in, the battery management seems to be settling down, and I'm at 70% battery mid afternoon!

It's a lot of money, but my word this feels like a great purchase. I know the specs are all there to be seen, but in use this thing is just superb. Highly recommended.

Just checked out this review on Tech Spurt.

Sure, it's got its downsides such as no wireless charging or OLED panel, and a slightly lower resolution than typically seen on a smartphone,
but it looks to pack a hell of a punch for the money (great screen size, adequate amount of memory, good battery life).

Comes with a stylus (T-pen) as well.

Edit: the 60 Ultra is even bigger at 7.2", though the 70 Pro (reviewed in the video) has got considerably longer software support and launched with Android 16.

Chinese phones have come a long way in the last decade or so. If they maintain software support as they say they would, there's no reason at all to consider Samsung and the likes tbh...
