You can always farm more filaments easily, for the later upgrades you will need the rarer materials that you cant just farm on a whim so don't worry about using filaments. You can only have one exotic armour piece equipped at any one time, so you definitely want to use some of your resources on your legendary gear. Ideally you will want to upgrade both, but legendary is cheaper to upgrade so upgrade that first
 
Grrrrr..

Spent all day farming the moon to get 2 purples.. 1st decoded to a green, 2nd is Titan only (I'm a Hunter).

I'm getting very frustrated now...

Ah cheers, didn't know you can only equip one Exotic item. Just didn't want to have to farm a full set of upgrades again! One item I can manage.

They need to tone it down a bit, I find it disrupts my aim. The weapons not really going to be that useful until you get the instant reload upgrade on it, the clip doesn't last more than 2 seconds :p

That armour engram is probably the best thing you will be able to spend your motes on for a while, the rest of the things you can buy with it are cosmetic(someone correct me if I'm wrong). There's no guarantee you will get something for your class, so don't get your hopes up. I got a exotic chest from mine, but I didn't pay attention to what other rarities the engram can produce.

I think exotic engrams can only decode to exotic stuff unlike legendary engrams. I bought it and got a chest armour but for a titan when I'm a hunter.

its a little off putting for sure :)

I bought the engram and it luckly decoded to an exotic warlock chest. If you hover over it it should say what rarity of item it decodes to?
 
Got my first character (a hunter) to level 10. Is light permanent? So I have an item atm that has +6, if I take that off, do I keep that +6, or is it just like a stat buff?

Its just a number attached to your armour. No buffs or anything its just the higher the light level of your armour the higher your level becomes.
 
Ooh one chest on moon gave me 11 Helium filaments, two blue engrams and an ammo synthesis kit = nice! Then as I went to grab another chest and I got kicked out just before I could loot it = payback from Bungie. :P

Yeah it does - big relief when I bought it, I hovered over it and it said possible contents were exotic but random class. Luckily I got a Crest of Alpha Lupi for my Titan, light21, intellect +137, revive team mates faster, spawn more orbs, carry more ammo for both special and auto rifles which suits my play style quite well.

Do any of the class pieces, in my case the Titan marks, give any extra bonuses? I haven't seen any that do, but it seems like the sort of thing you'd expect to give each class something extra.

Nah they are cosmetic just. Apart from the faction specific ones that earn you faction reputation.
 
On the 3rd stage of an Exotic bounty, need to do the weekly Strike.

Gonna leave it till morning. Since there's no matchmaking with the weekly strike I might ask a couple of people here if they're up for it :)
