I'm guessing they both will be trying to beat each other to launch..Hope both titles don't make the mistake of focusing their efforts on getting to the shelves first

Given the amount of money that both camps have, and the whole point of doing it as a kickstarter is so that the game gets done right without publisher interference, I doubt that will happen.

It's worth bearing in mind that both games won't be considered "finished" at launch anyway. They will be constantly growing, updated, living titles that continue to change because they will be continually worked on. The lack of a publisher means they won't follow the "ship it by a date, abandon it, take the money and run" business model espoused by far too many publishers.

Loving 3.0 when it works get stuck on the load screen more often than not :( but when I first got in OMG that space station looks totally stunning I cant wait to see the redesigns they have done for the other stations.

More Alpha 3.0 video. It doesn't look quite as nice at 1080P, so I think there's some heavy compression going on in the video. There's actually a hell of a lot of the basic game already functioning.

They both in it together! ;)
Indeed, I love that video and how they support each others projects like stereotypical Victorian gentlemen.. They are in it for the love of gaming, publishers are in it for the profit and are the cause of the vast majority of end user issues.

NVidia the way it's meant to be played.. On our latest graphics card that'll cost you just this years wage.

And WTF is going on with this early access BS on steam. I'd rather spend my money on JD, oh wait I have.. ergo this rampant ranting post :p

Latest newsletter is out.

The Alpha will soon be coming to an end as we prepare for the Premium Beta stage. There is one more phase of the Alpha to be released, covering travel and trading. We have always said we will give prior warning of the end of Alpha, and here it is: your last chance to join the Alpha will be April 25th. After this date we will stop taking Alpha orders.

For anyone still interested in joining the Alpha now but unsure if it is worth it for a short period of time before we start the Premium Beta - here are two fantastic reasons;
- As we move into the Beta process, all Premium and standard Beta builds will be given exclusively to the Alpha players first.
- Also, all Alpha players will be granted a life time discount of 50% on ship insurance in game as a thank you for your support!

Your last chance to participate in Alpha will be the APRIL 25TH
From then forward you can expect our Beta to roll out for Premium Beta players - more information on that is coming soon. Watch this space!
Want to upgrade from Beta? The upgrade path from Beta to the Alpha is still active! If you go to the shop and put the Alpha product into your basket, a discount will automatically be applied to reflect the level you are already on.
While I'm not personally interested in paying crazy money for alpha access (alpha 3.4 was recently released), I am interested that the alpha looks to be ending at the end of April, and the beta will follow close afterwards. The game is progressing nicely.

I am reading some speculation that the beta pool will get stable versions to test, the alpha will still run alongside it with new unstable features to be tested. Kind of like the way Mozilla has stable releases, and nightly builds that could do anything.

So do i get premium beta if I backed as "The Elite" £150 on Kickstarter?

Also, should the Alpha discount itself to £50 if I wanted to upgrade?

Official Premium Beta announcement:

Frontier Developments plc

Announces Elite: Dangerous Premium Beta

Frontier Developments plc (AIM: FDEV), the leading independent game developer with studios in Cambridge UK and Halifax, Nova Scotia, today announced the next milestone in the development of its forthcoming Elite: Dangerous game.

The Premium Beta effectively starts today, with Premium Beta players able to download a single player combat build of the game. The full Premium Beta will start on 30 May 2014, and until then, players will be able to practise with the single player combat build.

David Braben, CEO of Frontier, said:

"The Alpha process has worked well for us. We have gradually built out the key elements of the game, first locally, with single player combat, then with a few thousand players across the internet. On 30 May, the Premium Beta extends this to many thousands of players worldwide, with an increasingly rich game."
