The official HD7790 review thread

The 7850 1gb was extremely good value for money. No performance difference at 1080p over the 2gb. I can see why they wanted to replace it with a worse cheaper to produce card.

There is quite a difference in performance given the 1GB 7850 can run out of VRAM quite easily in more modern games.

What an utterly pointless card the 7790 is. Late, slow and the same price as a 7850 1GB.

An utter rip-off from AMD.

Its £20 too expensive. Once its £100 it represents good value in my eyes and i would have bought one instead of a £90 HD7770 OC for our second computer had it come a few months earlier.

Agreed,it needs to be cheaper. However The Tech Report review indicates they had better latency with the HD7790 than the HD7850 1GB. Hence at £100 it could be not a bad card!

The problem is that we must compare cards of a like price at time of release. The direct competitor of this card is the HD 7850 and the 7790 is slower, late and the same price, at least it is faster than the Nvidia card of the same price. I said the same thing when the GTX660Ti was released at the same price as the HD 7950.

I am aware the HD 7850 is being discontinued because they can't get the VRAM for it but that doesn't mean AMD should release a slower replacement for the same price.

I have to agree. This card should have been out at the same time as the 7850 1GB at least £20 lower in price; 1 year too late and same price as 7850 1GB...it's just very difficult to recommend this card to anyone...

The 7850 1Gb is no longer being produced as i understand it. I expect it will come down in price at some point as i agree that its £20 too expensive. IF Nvidia had a card that could rival it or beat it available then AMD might have to price it lower. As it stands there is nothing from Nvidia to rival it so why lower the price. The same applied when the 7970/7950 launched.

Either way, it is still a bit pointless at this stage in time and in the wrong price bracket...this "7790" is kinda pointless like the 192-bit memory bus GTX460 1GB that was out toward EOL...

I can understand AMD want to milk the 7000 series for all its worth...but 1 and a quarter of a year later and still stuck on the same gen (and prices still same as, if not higher than 4 months ago) is starting to get annoying...

I'm sure it will sell well as AMD wouldn't have brought it out otherwise. I think AMD make most of their money from the Cape Verde line of cards so bringing this card out is no surprise at all to me. If anything i think this should have been the original Cape Verde card in the first place but that's another discussion altogether.
