question about 3g
you know on iphone when there is no 3g you get the edge or round symbol, is that how it works with the ipad also or is it 3g or nothing ?

Indeed, it's hilarious and now it is clearly just people trying to put themselves off. :D

They'll have one as soon as they try one.

I see his point, and sort of agree. From my point of view, higher resolution = more screen real estate/canvas size. Apple doesn't seem to agree with that, and just sees it as higher 'print' quality. Games will certainly not be rendered at the native panel resolution the hardware's just not up to it, and I'm not sure how many apps will 'enlarge' their canvas considering the small screen size.

I just hope when this manufacturing technology reaches desktop monitors etc. we get the choice of screen real estate or definition, a 3840x2400 (I like 16:10 :p) 26" monitor would be bloody fantastic for productivity.

Well it does on a conventional PC, however on a 9.7" screen where the input is touch based it's hard to do that. Also, I bet at least some games will be 2048x1536 eventually, initially they won't of course.

They already exist if you have deep pockets.

The hardware doesn't have anywhere near the memory capacity or bandwidth for that resolution in games. Think in PC land you need a 3gb card with memory bandwidth in the 100's of GB/s to run a 2560x1600 setup.

Not quite there yet? Maybe some fancy stuff from the like of NEC or similar in NASA or something, but the IZGO/SHA 'breakthrough' which basically allowed the retina displays to be manufactured I don't think has been used on any big panels yet. 2560x1600 Seems to be as good as you can get as a consumer, and that's quite a way off 4k really.

£220 sale of 16GB iPad 1 confirmed & completed, and he's even letting me keep it till I get a 3rd gen :)

not just gotta find a way to sneak one on friday! :(

There's barely a chance in hell of the more graphically intensive games running at the full resolution - it's less powerful than a Vita for lord sake!

2048*1536 vs 960*544 with only an A5X... nah don't think so!

But this isn't PC land, the software is more efficient and the games aren't nearly as complex. Also no, all but the most demanding (BF3, Skyrim) of games will run fine at that resolution on a 1gb card like my 5870.

IBM T221/Viewsonic VP2290 have been available since as early as 2002 but no, it's not using the same tech as the retina displays.

Or to quote the late, great Freddie Mercury:

"I don't want an iPad... it's not easy living with a broken heart!"

*cough*

I am filled with sorrow to admit I'm considering a new iPad. Anyone know if they'll be cheaper at airport duty free? A friend might be able to get me one from there.

You're getting one now as well? My word.

I imagine it will be a bit cheaper at duty free, it wouldn't be duty free if it still had the duty on. :p

Stock levels would be more of a concern I think.

Apple rejected IZGO panels for this gen/batch. SHA is a a-Si TFT type process that is already used in ~25% of LCD screens. The iPad is too high volume for new/risky processes like that.

...still a wonderful screen though :p

I've been going mad, had the cash for an 3gen iPad, wife complained about her 3GS so spent it on a 4S for her now no cash till Friday for iPad......

I'm still going to order off apple and sit tapping my feet for the next 2-3 weeks!

oh FFS, post like this are starting to grind my gears.

Another thing that grinds my gears is when I can't find the droids I'm looking for.

And web browsing, books, HD video, games...

On a 9.7" screen none of those need to be at higher res. Yes it's expected to improve resolution when a new tablet is released, but as the only real improvement, it's a bit lacking really and is clearly Apple just trying to make more money - 2 year gap and real changes since iPad 2 would have made more sense and been better received IMO.

Not about trying to put myself off (not totally anyway) just looking for a way to justify the extra cost of the 3 over the 2.
