***The Official MSI 5850 Twin FrozeR Thread***

Marine- those clocks/temps are very nice.

I get 80C with 850core/1100mem/1.270voltage with Furmark running for 15mins. That's with fan speed at 90.

Time to upgrade this ancient case me thinks :o
Yea. Cases with just exhaust fans is not enough...you should get a case that got good air-intake as well (and ideally a fan mount at the side-panel next the the graphic card which you can install an intake fan for directly deliverying cool air to the graphic card).

Well my case has 7 places where there could be fans. 1 at top, 2 on side panel, 2 rear, 2 front.

Only the front and rear are connected because they are quite loud :o

I think I have a good excuse to put them back in now!

If you do install an intake fan on the side-panel next to the graphic card, do make sure you use a dust filter (otherwise cool air won't be the only thing that it is delivering to the graphic card...dust as well :p)

By the way, voltage 1.270 seem a bit high for just overclocking to 850MHz...have you try lowering the voltage to see if it will remain stable? For 850MHz, I'd try with 1200 first...if stable, the try lowering voltage; if not stable, then increase voltage at 0.010 at a time

Memory clocks are independent of core clocks. They should not affect the final core overclock but should be tested using several benchmarks at stock core settings to find the max possible overclock. It is also worth noting that memory modules will throttle back when pushed over their limits thus resulting in worse performance at that point. Watch out the benchmarks and find the stable memory clock first, no voltage tweaking needed, then take care of the core clock.

I personally try going up by 0.05V increments and finding the max stable core clock when, saving the profiles and tweaking up the best voltage/clock setting to get the voltage down as much as possible whilst maintaining stability.

I don't think this card can do much though.

All sorted, case came with a few fan filters

I noticed that as soon as I posted hehe, it's already down at 1.200 atm. Stress testing right this moment in fact :)

My card has a broken voltage controller, no matter what I set it to, it's locked at 1.088V (that's what GPU-Z shows me). MSI Afterburner reports voltage changes but my card isn't stable at any clocks but default. Was I really unlucky?

ordered on thursday(23rd) and should be getting it on 29th, could have gone for the 24th but decided to go with 29th

I have a lian li a05 case, going to run a bit hot I think. first thing first tho, will it fit in the case? I have the cpu watercooled, got a dual thermochill rad in the roof so the top part of the motherboard is blocked so no xfire option.

No. In GPU-Z my VDDC is stucked at 1.088v as well. So I think may be GPU-Z is not reading the VDDC of the MSI 5850 Twin Frozer properly...may be because of it being a custom designed PCB?

And I can tell you that changing the voltage in MSI Afterburner does make a difference...so I'd just ignore what GPU-Z's telling you regarding that.

Yep, already figured that out. The voltage control does work to some degree, hopefully it works up until 1.3V but I have no way to check this. Kombuster reports 1.088V at all times as well but the temps do change when playing around with the core voltage.

It does appear to be a mighty poor overclocker though, what clocks can you get with 1.2V?

Can someone do a Heaven run and post a screenie @ 1080p
5850@ core 1000MHz/memory 1300MHz
1080p 4xAA 16xAF Tessellation Moderate and Normal:

930 core, 1250 memory @1.25volts. 1920x1080 resolution.

I don't even get where to read the voltage in GPUz. You can tell it works though as you might not get a certain core stable then with a slight voltage increase it works.. and temps go up a little!

:(

I can't get mine too 1000 core.

It seems with the same settings though with tessalation normal the extra 70mhz = 1.1fps average extra!

Im going to see if I can get the bench to run at 950 core...
The core 1000MHz/memory 1300 was actually on 1.300v lol Also, while it is stable on Heaven Bench, it would crash in BFBC2.

Refer to my post at #39 on the settings that I manage stable in BFBC2 and Heaven.

Thats with 950 core 1250 memory 1920x1080p and tessellation normal and 16x anisotropy like the one you ran with 1000 core and 1300 memory!

I think for the extra core clock you might get out of it with any voltage over 1.2v not worth it in my opinion. Chances are you will get most of your overclock with a voltage upto 1.2v and the little you can push it with a higher voltage than that probably isn't going to make all that difference!

Overclock with best min FPS without changing voltage (my card crashes when i do)
is core clock 825mhz/memory 1200mhz

heaven benchmark

score: 1517
avg fps: 60.2
min fps: 32.7
max fps: 97.5

Not gonna use the 1.300v and 1000MHz for standard gaming. I've already settle on the two overclock profile I listed my post at #39.

Marine-RX179 looks like you have a similar setup to me(p5q deluxe, q6600, win7 64bit(well I'm going to be installing that soon, currently on vista 64bit), I have 2x2gb pc2-6400 crucial ballistix currently c5 [email protected] than their rated c4@2v). what settings are you using for the 3.6ghz oc? I wasn't able to go over 3ghz and get it 24hrs prime stable(it's been a couple years since I tried tho, can't remember how long it lasted before tripping up. that was with 1x2gb corsair xms2-6400 c5, upgraded to the crucial recently).

do you have a 1920 x 1200 or 192 x 1080 res monitor. what sort of fps(expcially minimum) are you getting? I got bfbc2 digital deluxe edition(includes the expansion pack) last night in the ea sale for £11.24, also have just cause 2, metro 2033, crysis, crysis warhead(got in the ea sale last night for £3.74). have other games also but those seem to be some of the ones that provide a tough test for the graphics cards.

all the benhmarks I've seen they use an i7 system oced to 4ghz+

What are you running crossfire...

This is taken from a 6950 on the 6950 overclocking thread...
