** The Official Nvidia GeForce 'Pascal' Thread - for general gossip and discussions **

I don't understand why so many people are freaking out about the price and OC potential. Did you even read the reviews? Overclocking is obviously limited by a poor reference cooler; why don't you take a pill and wait for custom cards before crying havoc.

Regarding price, we're obviously going to see decreases in the next couple of weeks when AiB cards start popping up.
There is no competition from AMD right now, at all. Nvidia can set any price they want and still sell their entire stock on launch. I don't expect having to pay more than ~£500 when I buy one in early September.

The cooler is excellent. The only problem is that in order for it to work with the required efficiency, it needs to run at very high RPM's, which in turn is extremely loud. But make no mistake, if you can deal with the noise, it will keep the card cool enough to run a pretty aggressive overclock.

The open cooler style cards will likely be able to maintain similar or better temps with a better acoustic profile right through the range though and as a result likely offer a bit more headroom - again with high volume to maintain lower temps. The downside being that all this heat is dumped inside your case. For many (small form factor etc.) this can be considered a deal breaker.

For those reasons, the reference (or is it founders?) nvidia cooler cannot be called "poor", but possibly a slight compromise.

I easily get 144 fps in BF4 in low for (wanabe)pro, and solid 135 with eye candy, BFHLs was more like 120 with eye candy and battlefront ~ 115. I'm expecting another drop for BF1, so I probably will upgrade.

But those prices... Need to see where the 1070 is at.

Strange I found battlefront to run better than BF 4 + hardline for me with max settings (excluding AA and res. scale setting)

Still, I expect a decent improvement especially if they are using dx 12, although if that is the case, then that will be another reason for upgrading anyway since nvidia seem to have sorted the dx 12 performance with the 1080 and I expect the 1070 too.

This is what anybody with some sense should be doing, regardless of the performance.

Reference cooler + higher cost is a double 'lose' in the value factor.

Ref cooler is desirable for those going SLI since it dumps heat out of the case but it's a very very small amount of people going to buy SLI 1080..

I was considering Nvidia this time but the lack of working ASYNC compute means I won't bother.

Paying twice as much for this as a 390x or high end Polaris does not seem right when future DX12 games are going to repeat the trend.
Sorry Nvidia, I'm out.

Pricing is getting crazy, 1080 is nearly double what I'm prepared to pay for a GPU, if the 1070 is more than £350 Nvidia have priced me out completely with regards to upgrading a 290X and it doesnt look like Polaris will be worthwhile either

I'm not sure I agree.

a) We don't know when the non-reference cards will be available
b) We don't know what the non-reference cards will cost
c) We don't know what performance benefit of the non-reference cards will be

So wait X for X cost and X benefit? Nope. I will be plumbing for the reference cards personally.

Cheers
Ben

EDIT: The cost is bonkers though...

Guys, the price is mental and anyone buying the FE knows they are paying a massive premium. I would hope those buying that will also be ripping off that transformer looking shroud and popping it under water.

Prices will settle but the typical price gouging is happening that we see with every generation of new cards is happening. Frankly I am more shocked that older forum members are shocked.

Good news everyone. The 1080 is on part with Console graphics.

:D Where exactly did that nonsense come from?

a) Not exactly, but it's hardly goign to be a long wait.
b) Not exactly, but we do know the MSRP and have a history of GPU sales to lean on
c) Again, not exactly, but I've never seen a case where they dont match or beat reference cards.

Do what you need to do, but you're shelling out a premium for what is in all likelihood going to be a worse performing card in some way.

If you're doing SLI then whatever, but if you are, you're probably not terribly concerned with getting best value in your purchases in the first place!

It looks like a good upgrade from my 970 that I sold, especially now I have a 1440p monitor, and I've saved up the £££ for a new GPU..

That said, I still won't be buying it if I can't get an AIB card for £550 or less. If it is more than that, I'll be looking at used 980Ti or 1070.

Reviews are out for the GTX 1080, time to drop those other GTX prices OCUK! :)

Wonder what I'll get for my 980 Ti if I decide to sell it on... :-/
