Am i right in thinking that once you "claim" these games they are yours to play whenever as long as you have got a active PS Sub, compared to game pass where the games will get removed after some time?

They will always be "yours" to play so long as you have an active subscription. If your sub runs out, you won't be able to access them.

As above, so remember to claim anything you might be potentially interested in.
Claimed monthly games only require an active sub (I still have access to games claimed from the PS collection, even though it's no longer available) but games from Extra etc. can come and go, unfortunately.

That's only the three or four monthly games on PS+ Essential. The PS+ Extra/Premium games will disappear at some point and you won't be able to play them unless you buy them.
