I'm so undecided. I'm really tempted to get the PS5 disc version because it is a hell of lot cheaper than the Pro with disc drive. On on the other hand having more FPS from the Pro is highly tempting.

I don't see the point in the Pro. The base PS5 is plenty powerful enough IMO. Shelling out loads more for slightly better visuals or the chance of slightly better frame rates just isn't worth the extra money IMO.

It's for enthusiasts. The base PS5 is fine for 95% of people, for anyone wanting the absolute best in console gaming then the Pro is for them.

PSSR, 2TB of built in storage, higher FPS, better visuals etc. is all what you're getting - but at a premium and if you don't think it's worth the money then the Pro isn't for you.

I bought a Pro for all the reasons you stated and also because I managed to get one at launch for 20% off via a Very code :)

Has been worth it for me and loved my time with the console.

Agreed. Put the money saved towards a nice OLED monitor.

As someone with a PS5 Pro coming up for a one-year anniversary I'd echo the comments that for most it probably isn't worth it. The gap between it and the normal base console isn't significant enough. It's also not all good in the sense that PS4 game upscaling is a pretty disappointing feature.

That said I've loved mine. Quieter than my 2022 OG base model, increased storage, fantastic support on first-party game with stunning graphics and fixed USB audio. As someone who spends most of their time on PS5, with PC and Switch 1/2 this has been brilliant. I sold the Series X last summer and went all in on the PS5 and it suits me perfectly for a lot of gaming.

I've had a good time with my PS5 Pro, my OG PS5 was not awfully loud, but it was noticeably louder than my Pro, and as I'm playing on a 65" OLED, the increased sharpness, performance and visual fidelity is definately noticeable in well done pro-enhanced titles. Recently played Alan Wake 2 on Quality mode, and it was an essentially locked 30 FPS (stability is as important as ACTUAL FPS within reason), once PSSR and motion blur were enabled, and thanks to the upscaling was much sharper than I was expecting (considering I also have a decent PC), with noticeably higher quality settings than the game running on base PS5 as of the latest patches. Again, because it was console on a large TV, with a controller, it felt fine; and actually the motion blur kinda helped in this slower paced, basically locked 30FPS scenario. As I understand, there should be upgrades coming to PSSR to bring it further inline with FSR4 on PC too.

I'm not going to say its night and day, but its definately noticeable, especially if you're playing on a larger TV; and the other quality of life improvements like more storage before NVME addition etc are all nice bonuses; I've got mine plumbed into a 65" OLED and proper AV surround sound, and I have a great time with it.

It does help that I got a banger of a deal on it, and paid less than the standard price WITH the BD drive. I do think the machine should really have been bundled with the drive out the box; but I'm glad that at least has been reduced in price since, even if the console hasn't.

Either way though, if you can get it for a decent price, and will use the storage (factor that in to the cost of adding if you were thinking of buying an OG PS5), it is the best way to play PS4/PS5 games IMO.

GTA6 delayed until November, which puts it within probably a year of PS6 and means I don't need to buy a PS5 Pro:p

I had a strong feeling it would be delayed again.

Also felt the inevitable PS6 update would be the best way to play the game, and this just reinforces that.

Thinking about treating myself to a PS5 Slim, thing which is holding me back is I bought an Xbox 360 a number of years ago, and I couldn’t get used to the controller i .e. coordination. Mostly played pc games such as FPS.

Any tips on how to improve handling the controls in a console game would be welcomed

Time.

Just committing to use a controller and putting time in with that controller will help build up muscle memory. Memory of how much you need to push the sticks in a certain direction, knowledge of button placement/combos etc.

I swap between mouse & key and controller quite regularly, depending on the game, but it all just comes down to time.

Didn’t realise you could use a keyboard and mouse. Interesting

As has been said, time will help, but for me personally I tend to avoid faster paced FPS games on console.

I played Halo Infinite on a Series X which I didn't really enjoy but on PC with keyboard and mouse it felt great.

Skyrim, Oblivion etc. were okay for me too as mostly melee based weapons.

Although I did sink a ton of hours into Cyberpunk on PS5 and don't remember it having any issues with guns and aiming. I did tend to focus on swords a lot and later on gorilla arms and those blade arms... Honestly some of these are just so OP it's hilarious and super fun. Think I'll go play it again this weekend as still not done the expansion.

OK, I need a new 4K Blu-ray player, should I go for a dedicated device or grab a PS5? Grabbing a PS5 seems the more sensible option if the playback quality is any good as it then affords me the option of gaming from the settee on the big TV.

So fine folks of OcUK, what's it like for Blu-ray playback?
