I just don't know whether I should or not :( bloody amazing deal but I really want a 512MB card because I try to run at quite a high res (1600x1200).

Is anyone else in the same situation?!

Cheers,

Suman

I was faced with the same decision. I'd been planning to buy a Powercolor X1800XT 512Mb, but I ended up ordering the Sapphire X1800XT 256Mb because it's such a good price at the moment. I'd have paid an extra £30 or so for the 512Mb card, but I didn't think it worth paying an extra £65 for it.

My situation sounds like it's a little different to yours, so my decision was a little easier to make. I have a 17" CRT at the moment, but I'm planning to upgrade to a 17" or 19" TFT, so I was most interested in 1280x1024 resolution. At that resolution, there's little or no difference between the 256Mb and 512Mb cards. Another factor was that the two games that I play at the moment (Dungeons & Dragons Online and FS2004) will play fine on either card. I'm not into first person shooters at all, I'm mostly into flight simulations and RPGs. The most demanding game that I'm planning to buy any time soon is Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (I really enjoyed Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind). I read the reviews at firingsquad.com very carefully. As far as I can see, at 1280x1024, having 512Mb would make a 5-10% difference in frame rates in the mountain areas, but little or no difference in the foliage areas, where frame rates are lowest.

If you're planning to run at higher resolutions, or you're into first person shooters, then I think it's going to be much tougher for you to decide whether the 512Mb card is worth the extra £65 (or 38% of the price) to you. My feeling is that, if you're planning to run at 1600x1200, then it would probably be worth paying extra for the 512Mb card or even the X1900XT.

Hey,

I would love to get an X1900, but I'm a student on a tight budget so £170 is pretty close to my money ceiling :( if it had a decent quiet cooler I would have snapped it up immediately, but I'd NEED to get a VF900 which pushes the total to £205. The only reason I'm in the market for a new card is that my X800 refuses to work in a PCI-E x8 slot (whole 'nother story), so this is a sort of "unwanted purchase"!

Apart from DoW, I mainly play FPS so I guess that's a good argument for the extra RAM...

I shall keep pondering!

I was, for all of an hour. It didn't take long for me to decide that these are absolutely insane value at the moment.

Oblivion is running happily at 1280x960 with max detail and HDR+4xFSAA. Worth every penny, in fact, I feel like I just robbed Sapphire by daylight.

Are you not running HQ 16x AF and 4x AA with HDR?
There are many posts of you using these settings in oblivion.
It's odd that others with x1900 xtx cannot run at these settings with 2.6ghz cpus and have playable fps.

And yet you do it with s 754 and 8900 odd marks in 3d 05

Anyway to the OP at the res you want to play then you must get a 512 mb card ..
AT high resolutions the 512mb cards pull away

Why yes, yes I am. :) A random name is also running in similar settings, with a stock 3500+ if I recall, and in the X1900 camp there were two or three people telling egt that his card was underperforming, but he wouldn't listen.

I assume that by "others" you're talking about egt, since he likes to bang on about this every time it comes up. Nice way to continue the trolling in disguise easyrider, but I'm not falling for it. :)

And the X1900 owner in the first thread spamming screenshots/fraps statistics, and the other one or two X1900 owner who said his performance is fine, and the X1900 owner in this thread who just said his performance is fine, and another X1800 owner who runs in more or less the same settings I do with an even better FPS using a stock 3500+.

"Keep on trollin' along." :o I'm going to quit feeding your trolling in this thread before you get it locked like the last ones.

I ask a simple question...and this is the response I get
Why do you always insist on insulting people in threads.

This is a forum for discussion not insults.

Good grief:confused:
People post geniune screenshots at max settings showing perfomance records in posts to help and inform people and you call it spamming?

If I remember correctly The terms Green cheerleaders etc...posted by you get threads closed.

Your last two posts have no content other than insults and jibes at people.
This is a gfx card forum not a playground

I'm sorry if my compare's bothered you :)

In response to the OPs question... Yes you should!

I upgraded this week from an X850XT to an X1800XT and it is so much better, CSS runs at totally full settings an extra 30FPS faster on average, its allowed me to up the res and details on Oblivion and still get a faster frame rate. My 05 score has gone up from 7000 to over 9000 as well:)

What FPS are you getting with 16 HQ AF 4x AA and HDR enabled in oblivion?

i got one of these to upgrade my x800xl

it will be arriving monday next week probably

i have a 17" TFT and am locked to 1280x1024 so i dont think the extra ram is worth the extra cost

looking forward to trying it out :)

am i right in assuming that these are better/same as 7800GTX/7900GT (at stock) ??

Marginally Faster at stock.
But 7900 GT will overclock higher on stock volts and be faster as a result.
Thats why people buy them. :)
