The Offspring New album

Just finished a first listen.

There's about 50% Offspring circa 2000 onwards, and 50% new, middle of the road rock/pop. (Not counting Dirty Magic of course).

Dexters vocals seem to have been produced in a annoying way, instead of shining, clear and in front like older albums, they're sort of, well, rounded off/smoothed and left a little lower in the mix. They did this a bit for the previous album too.

I guess Dirty Magic was re-recorded for its 20th anniversary, and if I'm brutally, brutally honest, it may well be the best track on the album!

I'm a little disappointed, as it doesn't really go anywhere or do anything new, and I'm a big, big, Offspring fan.

After my first listen through i'm pretty happy. It's a good album. Some good songs, some ok songs and some songs that will go on to my Offspring playlist.

The Offspring have always attraced a part of the fanbase that keeps going "it's OK, but it's no Smash" It's happened on every album since Smash and it's fricking annoying. Not very many bands can release brilliant albums all the time. It goes for anyone that's been in the business for that long. Look at U2, Green Day, Linkin Park etc. All outfits with very proud fanbases but at the same time people going "Wasn't as good as Dookie", "Isn't Hybrid Theory"

It's a decent album, the fanbase will like it, they may get one charting record but they've never really had much commercial success since MTV went down the pan.

As for Dexters vocals, they sound good for his age. I wouldn't expect him to be able to carry the same voice that was on the earlier records.
