anyone else now finding these rare enough that you actually notice them when you see one out and about on the road? I've always found the way these common older cars suddenly disappear to be quite interesting....

how long before someone starts trying to push a tidy V6 as a classic car?

It happens a lot with our low used car values. Even a tidy Mk1 Mondeo is worth £300 tops. So when one needs a £400 job, say a clutch change, it goes in the bin despite there being nothing really wrong with it.

I wonder where the OcUK Mk1 Mondeo is now? I sold it to some dude on eBay...

Its true, just 3 years ago there was one on every street with duct tape holding the foam from dropping out of the back bumper, now I hardly even see mk2s about.

IMO there were so many of them about that they had zero value, got driven mainly by zero value people, and for these reasons got treated as you'd expect, then binned at the whiff of any impending expense.

Still have fond memories of the 295,000 mile 1.8 LX I drove for 18 months, then gave away when the noises it made starting up every morning became embarrassing. There was also this 2.0 Si I picked up off ebay for £215, thrashed it about for 6 months then sold it on for the same money. And this was over five years ago. No wonder no one bothered fixing them and binned them!

shame :(

As fox says they get a £400 clutch bill and cars like that just get scrapped :(

I reckon that would have been the least of their worries with that car :p It was, er... "well used" to put it delicately...

Come to think of it, I haven't seen a MK1 round here for a good while either! There are still some MK2's about - complete with duct tape on the bumpers.

Reminds me when I first started driving and I was looking for a first car 4 years ago, I remember looking on ebay and AutoTrader for Fiesta MK3's & Peugeot 205's and their used to be nearly 150 cars nearby for sale but now their is probably only around 10-20 of both of these cars within 100 miles :( Ford Escort's seem to be a rare sight now as well.

i saw a mk1 this morning. it was rough.

when did anyone last see a properly nice one?

Didn't know Ford made a properly nice one :P

Jokes aside tho the mk1 Mondeo population world have been hit very hard by the scrappage scheme no? Plus a lot world have been fleet vehicles as they were a bit of a rep car so the recession cant have been good for them

One of my lasting memories of driving in the 90s was spotting those lime green/yellow mk1 Mondeos, I really liked them for some reason!

I miss my L reg 1.8 GLX, should never have sold it, would have saved so much money by running that, nothing really wrong with them even now

Can't remember the last time i saw one, barely see any mk2 mondeos either, I just assume most have probably fallen apart lol. I still see plenty of old carinas, primeras, accords etc on the road.

Talking of old cars, saw a an old rover 214 yesterday and surprisingly it was in very good nick and yes it was moving!
