What's the deal with the duct tape on EVERY mk1 out of interest?
Were the bumpers made out of uber brittle plastic that just randomly cracked, or were/are people forever driving into things?
OR are the bumpers so hideously expensive to replace that nobody bothers to replace them?

Got a MK2 here. (with duct tape on the back)
Definitely seems to be brittle plastic. I certainly didn't reverse into that rock and then drive forward with it caught under the bumper
Still love my ST24 despite it being rubbish aside from the engine!
My mum used to have a mint Ghia-X mk1 years ago, full leather and all the toys. Was great!

Now I feel old. My mate's dad used to drive a 2.0l Cortina Ghia in gold, My dad had a Blue Cortina 1.6L

The bumpers are cheap, I hit a badger, a sheep, another sheep, a crow, and a lamp post with mine. It stood up pretty well all things considered. Oh, and a hare too!
You never got to drive the V6 twin turbo Mondeo? Bad luck, I thought pretty much everyone managed to have a go in it before Fox crashed it

So why don't people replace the bumpers if they're cheap? Given that most MK1s are green there must be thousands of bumpers in scrapyards up and down the country.

A roll of duct tape is significantly cheaper than a new bumper.

Duct tape matches the colour my mondeo is. Ie silver with a layer of mud and other dirt. Whilst the bumpers are no doubt cheap if you know where to look I really can't see the point for a car that's worth so little. Just keeping it aside for when I inevitably have to replace it with something else.
It's covered in scratches from where it got keyed a couple of years back plus some rust around the arches so it would still look rough anyway

My neighbour has a W plate estate as her work wagon. It consists mainly of rust. There are a fair few in the car park at my workplace. Most look near the end of their lives.

You've had that for sometime now. Remember pushing it out in Silverstone.

yeah had it for approaching 4 years, and all I've had to do to it is put 6 tyres on it, replace a broken arb and top up fluids. Cheap shed motoring!

We will probably see them popping up as classics in 5-10 years just the Sierra seems to have gained popularity over the last couple of years.
