^^With my shades ON they look 'ok' , with them off, WAY to overexposed for my taste.

B&W conversion may work better?

BW would look beyond high key, too much detail lost in the over exposed areas.

Diffuse the flash next time :p

If you have the RAWs still see how much you can recover of it, at the moment it's gone completely but you did say that you boosted them in post as well (can't think why :D )

Some automobile ones from today's leisurely drive:

[some car pics]

Landscapes tomorrow perhaps. depends on the cloud type in the sky :p

Could you give me some pointers on what setup/post-prod you used here? I've recently had a crack at car photography and I just wasn't getting the 'pop' I was looking for.

Sure thing,

For those shots I used HDR (5 shots) and used some techniques that Trey Ratcliff gave a tutorial short on a while back: http://www.stuckincustoms.com/hdr-tutorial/

Obviously each shot is different so use his tips as a baseline and you'll end up with results that work for your particular images.

To set them up, the usual of course, tripod, mirror lockup and the bracketed shots should be metered from a neutral area of the scene to ensure you get the best under/over exposures throughout the 5 shots. Use more shots if you have to but I find 5 works great for almost all scenes really.

For the other car ones posted in the past I used 2x wireless flashguns on umbrellas to light up the car(s), nothing too special with that kind of setup really, just play with the lighting until it's favourable.

In post processing (I use Lightroom) I have my own pre-sets that I've built up over the years, I apply those and fine tune per image really.

A few from fairly recently.

My mate's brothers band. I was experimenting with a wireless flash on this one, the venue was tiny and cramped as hell so I didn't have room to bounce as I had planned and I had no diffuser so they are pretty harsh. I kinda like them regardless.

This next one was an unexpected model shoot.
I was out in Glasgow a few months ago and was setting up my tripod to take a few pics of a wall when about a dozen other togs walked round the corner with a model in tow. I was somewhat bemused until one bloke introduced himself, he was a pro who was doing some kind of walkabout lesson. He asked if I would mind holding off for a few minutes so he could use the wall and move on, he suggested I might like to take a few shots of the model so I did. Not really something I practice and obviously she was focused on about 12 other cameras so it's not the greatest pic.

And the wall.
