Thanks, taking a look now

Edit: In her kit list a few minutes in she mentions a 24 1.2... I know gear isn't everything but being so woefully unfamiliar with the gear you have isn't a great advertisement of your expertise :/ Is there a particular one you thought I should watch as this first one seems very beginner level, talking about wanting selective focus but then shooting a 1D4 instead of a 1DS3 or 5D, for example. (I know a 1D is very capable of adequately shallow depth of field but all the advantages of shallow depth of field, image quality and noise performance associated with her fast lenses are just completely nullified by using a crop sensor camera which makes very little sense to me, especially when she doesn't need the reach or the speed of 1D bodies)

Edit/comment 2: I don't think much of actions that people don't make themselves. They can be useful but I get the impression she only works with actions and doesn't understand much of photoshop behind that. She also seems a tad rude/arrogant. Her portfolio is average from what I've seen of it, at least not good enough to back up the arrogance she comes off with.

Lol, she's better than you at directing, engaging, and evoking emotion and expression.
She obviously does know what she's talking about, else Chase Jarvis wouldn't have picked her but I do see what you mean, her work on the video looks better.
Take what you can use, leave the rest.

Edit:
Btw, your PS processing is a little too strong imo.

She's had 25 years, big whoop she's better with models than a 17 year old guy who's had two shoots. She got her lens lineup wrong and has a very mediocre port with the amount of arrogance she comes off with.

There are a couple of things that are useful in there on posing, but I have no problem with letting it be known that I find her unpleasant or her portfolio average. A lot of this video sounds like boasting, which I guess comes from a career of having to sell yourself to clients but at the same time, photographer to photographer it just sounds arrogant, and unimpressive when her boasts are of mean feats like being able to hold a 70-200 IS for 1/4 shutter speeds.

As for the processing, that's your opinion and you're perfectly entitled to it, but I'm still new to this. I'm experimenting with stuff and I'm sure over time I'll eventually settle on a personal style but I'd sooner be able to say that I can go all out if I need to, and be doing less as a result of conscious choice not to go over the top, rather than not being able to go that far if an image needs it. I've been going for Jaime Ibarra lately so of course it'll be over the top - I'm not as good as him, but if I never try I never will be

Everyone has average stuff, everyone. There's a natural balance to the universe whereby average<>good need to go hand in hand :p

I take that, I don't jump down the throat of every average photographer as I'd still consider myself far below average. My problem with her is that half of this talk just sounds like her boasting, or her being rude, along with that.

Edit: got to the bit around 34 minutes in about dealing with models really not into it, and it could be very useful as snapshots of what to do. I did manage to get my friend out of it by the end of the shoot anyway but as I learn these sorts of things can do nothing but help :)

I took some pics of this guy a few weeks ago - his dancing wasn't great but he was working the crowds really well.

Cracking picture, such a difficult subject to get a decent shot off, with all the tourists and traffic. How long did that take to get so little traffic?

No time at all actually! There was a massive group of tourists on the corner that I took that photo from but I literally walked to the front and took it then walked off. I just happened to be really lucky with the traffic :).

Sorry for spamming this thread lately. Taking into account what you guys said I had another go at a couple of them. It's not been much work but trying my B/W processing on them, just through lightroom so no real retouching, didn't even bother putting a watermark on these.

I prefer the colours, the B+W look washed out (as do the colours) I can see what your doing and it seems your running it through some fashion filters in LR but I dont think you need to. i think this was discussed earlier and you said it was down to taste which is half true BUT on the flip side its so easy to ruin great shots by running it through the LR spinner just too much. I always find that sort of processing is reserved for shots set in high light or if your shooting ETTR
have you tried it with a few contrast/vibrance/black tweaks on the original image? does that not look better:confused:

Personally I much prefer the B&W, I quite like the washed out look (and think it was likely intentional). Colour ones looked muddy and a little too unnatural in terms of the actual colour.
