The price of graphics cards will continue to tank and will stay low for at least 2 years - Here's why

most people are likely only gaming a couple of hours a day anyway

game during the night and save your self 25p every 2 hours then.

or you mean because you won't have any money after electric costs rise?

No money after energy rises.

When a large proportion of the population are deciding between heating or eating, buying a GPU costing hundreds or even thousands won't even enter their heads. Things are going to be bad for the next couple of years. Nvidia, AMD, their partners and retailers will be desperate to shift stock.

the heating or eating will be the poorest 50% of the country who likely couldn''t afford to PC game anyway

Who do you think buys the most GPU's? You just need to look at the Steam charts to see that it is low to mid range GPU's that are the best sellers. The people that buy them are looking for the best bang for buck. Those people will be feeling the pain of the energy rises, food rises, fuel rises etc and will not be buying GPU's.

That's not how it works. Prices won't tank. People will just buy lower tiers if they're struggling. 4050Ti instead of 4060Ti.

Top brand names in supermarkets aren't tanking. People are simply buying more from the value ranges instead. Same thing.

The amount of people even considering buying a GPU is about to fall of a cliff at anywhere near the price they are currently retailing for. Spending £300 on a low end GPU will be laughable in about 6 - 12 months. A GPU is a pure luxury item that uses a fair chunk of electric which is basically un-affordable now and can't be compared to food. We are about to enter a recession that will be worse than any other in living memory.

The reason a low end GPU cost £300 is because of pandemic/mining/shortage.

That's coming to an end so prices are returning to normal. Before the pandemic, the low end cost £100. Those prices will be back to normal. Not because of energy prices though.

So you agree that prices are going to tank then, you just don't agree on the reason why.

Do you agree that if the economy was doing well and people had a decent amount of discretionary spending then GPU prices would probably stay at similar levels to now and would not reduce in price?

No I don't agree. In 2018 when the last mining craze ended, GPU prices returned to normal (or "tanked" as you call it). I don't remember problems with the economy back then and energy prices were normal.

Sales volumes were probably pretty good back in 2018 once prices reduced. I think this time prices will fall and sales will be low too. That will be mainly because the cost of living is out of control. Do you agree with that?

No one in their right minds will take that fix the OP posted though, they will just go on a price capped tariff which is currently capped around 28p or so. The trouble is this will rise in Oct allegedly up about +70% to ~47p. Which in itself is something I wouldn't believe I would see for decades.

There aren't any price capped tariff's available for 28p for people renewing. The best price I could get yesterday was 40p. That will be at least 60p by October. My estimated energy bill for this coming year is over £3000 for an average sized 3 bedroom house with 2 adults and one 6 year old.

The electrical cost of gaming is very little. The hardware cost is another matter entirely.

The electrical cost of gaming will start to become noticeable when electric costs 60p per KWh. 3 hours of gaming on a PC that consumes 550 watts will cost £1. Add that £1 to all the other electric you are using each day and it may be one of the things people consider cutting back on. £1 for 3 hours entertainment is still pretty cheap but over the course of a month it will cost a noticeable amount for low income families.

You are quite right about the hardware cost.

Who games for three hours every day? If you have 3 hours spare every day then you might look at using that time more profitably. Like educating yourself for a better paying job.

Loads of people do. You must not have kids!

As for Ray Tracing, stick with what you have, which games just fine, or spend hundreds of pounds during the greatest recession in living memory for a feature that makes like difference to the game play experience?

Cap could be set at £5,038 by April 2023. Discretionary spending is going to collapse in the UK if that happens. Shops, Pubs, Clubs, all manner of businesses will close because they will be hit with the double whammy of no customers and uncapped energy bills. If Westminster don't do something, it will be like the 1920's.

There is no way that GPU's don't collapse in price at that point.

Strange Octopus only show me those prices as business rates. choices I get for domestic are smart tariffs, I'm on5p/15p 25pSC

If I go into my account and select the change my tariff option this is what I get:

Octopus 12 Month Fixed:

Loyal Octopus 12 Month Fixed:

I got a renewal email from Octopus offering me electric at 40p day / 7.5p at night which I kind of had to accept. 16p per Kwh up to 40p and that is what is considered a good deal for a 12 month fix these days!

Ah right, I use this for their prices.

Edit to add.

I take it you just renewed your GO tariff, as that will be way cheaper

If you filter on that page for 'domestic' and 'fixed' then you will see that the cheapest fixed rates available to new customers that don't own an EV is 75.38 p/KWh. If you do own an EV the cheapest is the Octopus Go tariff (the one I went for).

So it seems like Octopus don't want any new customers coming from different providers unless you own an EV.
