The quandry.. The procrastination. Help?!

All the below specs hit my budgets would be interested to hear any optimisations, any obvious changes to the below and above all a helping hand as to which one to pick! ;]

Tender towards the 8gb, although would consider 4gb memory if the money was spent better elsewhere in the setup. The AMD motherboard is a complete stab in the dark.. help there if its no good would be appreciated. Also the Graphics card ive read good reviews on it but maybe ive missed something. Thanks for any help forthcoming!

A bit of everything would be the fair answer. From gaming (FPS mainly COD4 and the upcoming Modern Warfare 2), some sql, few virtual machines to test various things general home entertainment. Ta

If you can afford it then i'd go for that i7 setup, will do everything you want it to.

you are aware of the impending release of new ATI cards? 5870 etc, if you do a reasonable amount of gaming at decent res Id be wanting a better card than a 4870, the 4870 will cope, but its surpassed now, 4890 if not too fussed, or one of the new ones

You've got a wide variation in budget there. I'd put more variation in the graphics card - get a 4890, or wait a week and see what the 5800s are like. You could definitely afford one with the i5, compared to the i7.

Thanks for feedback thus far, i do plan to do a fair bit gaming but after going all out a few years back for a graphics card i now when upgrading try keep the level to 100-130ish for upgrades.. that said i am holding on the fire button until the new ATI cards are released.

Im definately thinking the i7 will give me that piece of mind i need not upgrade the basics for some time to come. The i5 coming out just made that decision harder. I thought there might be more to the AMD but was very suprised when it ended up costing the same as the other two almost!

For your applications, i'd go for the i7 920 if you have the money. With that (very nice) UD3R board you get a great system for a similar price to the others (especially with DDR3 6GB prices very close to 4GB prices). Though you may want to change the cooler, the Aplenfohn coolers seem to perform well, but I'd still go for this, you know you want to

Btw, good call on waiting for the 5800 cards, It looks like the 5850 is going to be well worth a look, though I don't think it will arrive at the 100-130 level (more like 200). Even so it should bring the prices of DX10 cards down a bit.

I went for i7 920 / UD3R / 6gb OCZ Reaper 1800mhz / Asus Glaciator 1024 4870

Going to use the retail cooler for now then possibly upgrade if i feel the need down the line. Arrives tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
