The Real NPD Sept Sales Figures

Whats the point of posting these numbers every month to have a arguement??

Honestly, isn't there anything better to do?

This is interesting. We all follow the consoles, whether we buy them or like them, we find it interesting to know sales figures, not only of hardware but of software.
This is hardbacked proof for figures we talk about. It's different to the PC market where you only have sales charts.

The 360 has even seen a reasonable boost here the most sold in one week this year and only half of the number of PS3s sold.

Not quite sure what you are saying - the PS3 sold twice as many as the X360 in the last week? (Im not intentionally pushing that fact, just a slightly confusing way of it being phrased :))

I am surprised at the relative tiny amount of the PS2 though (compared to the rest of the world) Japan "only" equates for less than 20% of sales, and seing as its twice the size of the UK's its quite a small percentage.

North America:

360 HALO 3* MICROSOFT (CORP) 1 3.3 million
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE NINTENDO OF AMERICA 2 282K
NDS LEGEND OF ZELDA: PHANTOM HOURGLASS NINTENDO OF AMERICA 3 224K
PS2 MADDEN NFL 08 ELECTRONIC ARTS 4 205K
360 SKATE ELECTRONIC ARTS 5 175K
360 MADDEN NFL 08 ELECTRONIC ARTS 6 173K
WII METROID PRIME 3: CORRUPTION NINTENDO OF AMERICA 7 167K
360 BIOSHOCK TAKE 2 INTERACTIVE (CORP) 8 150K
NDS BRAIN AGE 2: MORE TRAINING IN MINUTES A NINTENDO OF AMERICA 9 141K
PS3 HEAVENLY SWORD SONY (CORP) 10 139K

Canada:

360 HALO 3 = 135K
360 NHL 08 = 54.5K
PS2 NHL 08 = 41.7K
360 HALO 3 LEGENDARY ED = 27.2K
WII PLAY W/ REMOTE = 25K
360 HALO 3 COLLECTORS ED = 24.9K
PS3 NHL 08 = 20.8K
NDS BRAIN AGE 2: MORE TR. = 20.8K
WII METROID PRIME 3: CORR. = 16.4K
PS2 GUITAR HERO 2 W/GUITAR = 15K

This is proof that the software rate for the PS3 just isn't good enough, not just in terms of exclusives (1 game) but also in it's game attachment rate (2 games in 2 countries top 10). People have been screaming out for AAA titles on both formats and despite people trying to force Heavenly Sword into that catagory, figures would say otherwise.

Even more interesting is the sales figures for Madden 08. It has sold most of its copies on the Playstation2, which is no real surprise as it has a massive fanbase. It's also sold very well on the Xbox360, but despite the number of PS3 owners in North America it would appear it's not shifting on the PS3. I was really expecting that to be a PS3 system seller and massive shifter on the PS3, so it's very surprising that it's not featured in the Top 10.

I must say, the sales figures for Skate are very encouraging and surprising, having it sell 2,000 more copies than Madden 08 on the Xbox360 must have sales beyond EA's wildest dreams.

NHL, as always, has sold well in Canada. Not so encouraging is the fact that more than twice the number of copies have shifted on the Xbox360 to the PS3, yet it still sold more copies than MP3 on the Wii (quite surprised it hasn't done a lot better).

As for people claiming Halo3 wasn't AAA, nor a system seller have, as I and many others expected, made themselves look incredibly stupid. A massive 3,000,000 plus sold in North America.

I am curious though, had Halo3 not been seperated into 3 different releases in Canada, what would the other games be in the list. Or likewise, had the 3 versions of Halo3 been seperated in North America there wouldn't have been 1 PS3 game in the Top10 (very worrying when it's such an anticipated game).

I am really looking forward to seeing figures of next month (this month) with the new price drop and seeing how many PS3 games feature in the Top10 (though we can discount Motorstorm and Resistance as bundle games). I'd expect large sales for Heavenly Sword and a massive increase in HW sales for Sony. However, it's clear that HS wasn't the premium priced console seller they were praying it would be and as a result, they have needed a (much needed) price drop.

Overall, a big well done to EA games and Bungie for an incredible number of sales for September.

Aye, sorry, I've just read it and edited. "The 360 has even seen a reasonable boost here with the most sold in one week this year and was 'only' outsold 2:1 by the PS3." I should remember not to type posts with one hand whilst my daughter is on my lap with a 2nd window open on cbeebies!

Where did this attachment rate thing come from? I have never heard of it in any other console battle until this one? who started it? I guess MS since they clearly are winning it, but does it actually mean anything?

I personally never have more than 4 or 5 games at any one time, I no longer keep games these days.

IT's not Microsoft, it's a lot of Western things.
In Lehmans terms, the East keep themselves very much to themselves. Sega, Sony and Nintendo all benefitted from this, unfortunately Microsoft can't.

Yeah I can't see MS ever making any impact in the Japanese market, I don't even know why they bother, surely the US and European market can make them enough money? I am also sure I read a lot of Japanese people would not buy the original Xbox simply because it was too large, mad really.

I think you did remarkebly well then (I wasnt meaning to give you grief - just thought maybe you were saying something else) :D

I think its more how many pieces of software are bought compared to hardware (brand new of course) so selling them on afterwards doesnt matter - and as far as I can see all the 2nd hand sales dont count (otherwise attach rates are meaningless imo)

To be fair I havent heard of it before this gen either but probably be corrected lol

It would actually be interesting to see (even if its just hindsight knowledge) what the early attachment rate for the PS2 and X360 for the first 6 months or so (when there was little software out) Just to see whether MS always starts with a bang and just keeps it going where as Sony MAY start slowly and get better through the HW products life cycle as more software appears

Maybe in japan they have tighter control on selling electronic items that have a good chance of failing ;)

(That is a joke btw fanboys)

Ill put my neck on the line and say by far it will be the best selling Console this Christmas.

Reasons...

So many great games
Price and great value bundles

I think MS will probably win the software war - but I dont think its necessarily win the h/w war over the xmas period.

X360 has been out for 2 years by then - why would they see a dramatic rise all of a sudden, yes Halo 3 has just been released and a few other potentially AAA titles - but surely during those two years people who are really eager would already have one, and its "only" the kids that have grown up in the intervening period that it will mainly interest. Otherwise you are relying on the old catalogue to sell more hardware....

Sony on the other hand has just had a quite a big price cut, several brand new games , hopefully Home - but thats looking more unlikely i admit, not to mention the appeal of the combined br drive for family entertainment (yes Ms has a hd-dvd drive, but its never bundled /whole seperate purchase, it hasnt got the elegance of all in one, and are MS actually pushing it that hard?

the wii could easily outsell both of course.......IF N decide to ship enough

Dont forget that Sony have already caught up in Europe after 7 months of sales of the PS3 with nigh on 2 years sales of X360 - Europe just seems to prefer Sony on the whole

Im really only trying to discuss facts and opinions rather than incite an arguement - If I am wrong come Jan then so be it :)

A price cut which Microsoft predicted and Sony's brand new games which have under delivered and I'm almost 100% sure Sony confirmed Home wont be released until Spring 08. The Halo effect still isnt over, remember a lot of kids will still want it and it will be an easy choice for mummy and daddy. I think saying the PS3 wont come anywhere but last is wishful thinking.

As for the wii, I really dont care if it sells so no comment from me.

all we are seeing atm mainly with the ps3 is people buying the 60gig model before they disappear, yeah there will be a few interested in the 40gig one now its £299, but i still don't think atm its enough to drive sales considering whats available on the PS3 compared to its rivals and all the bad press its still getting (although majority probably are not so clued up on this). then there is the Xbox360 arcade edition due out soon which now include wireless controler , 5 free arcade games, 256mb mem card and hdmi for possibly the same price as the core is now which IMHO a fantastic price for entry level gaming if your into HD goodness

Gotta pick you up on this. How many of those sales were pre-orders or bought on recommendation? i.e. not bought because they played it then thought 'wow this is great!' ?
My point is, just because it sold that many doesn't make it a great game. It's the most hyped game ever, it's the much awaited third in the trilogy, these are the reasons people bought it. They only found out, after playing it for themselves how 'great' or 'AAA' it is.
A question for you, if it was revealed (for example) that 50% of that 3,000,000 thought the game was crap and wanted a refund, would it still be the game you say it is?

*disclaimer* This argument can be put to any game on any platform, not just Halo 3.

Oh give it a rest. Its Halo, if you didnt like the first one then bought the third one purely on hype and again didnt like it you only have yourself to blame. I suppose all the high scores it got even from respected magazines like Edge (10/10 iirc) bought into the hype? or maybe they were paid off?

As for the 360 sales on par with ps3, sony must be asking themselves where they went wrong and lost it. Still what a great time to be a gamer.

It's always been mentioned, but statistics have never been a big feature in previous 'battles'.
