The real time strategy / turn based strategy / grand strategy thread

I am a big C&C and AoE 1,2 and 3 fan but for some reason I struggle to get into other strategy games. Has anyone got any recommendations For similar base based games?

Also I feel like I should like Civ games (for the same reasons I like AoE games... I like the idea of progressing a Civilisation through the ages). Which civ game is the best for beginners to the game type?

Civ 4 is the best Civ game imo. You might also like Warcraft 3 and the expansion pack. That was a pretty decent RTS game.

Been a busy weekend but managed to get some serious time to play EU4 and I'm loving it. I'm playing as the Ottomans and my expansionist policy is going well.

I'd love to play a multiplayer game with someone if they were up for it.

I want to get into RTS, but always found it way too complicated. I have Company of Heroes for free so that may be a good starting point. Any one else struggle to get into them?

Company of Heroes is a great game to get into RTS games with.

I've never really had a problem getting into RTS games but then I've been playing them since I was about 6 or 7 years old. Even grand strategy games that take a few hours to learn how to play I normally get into pretty quickly.

In fact the only 2 genres of games I play on the PC are strategy games and RPG's. The rest I always play on consoles.

Just thought I'd bump this thread.

I've been watching some videos about Victoria 2 and have fallen in love with it. I'm definitely going to get it. Hopefully it'll be on sale on the Steam Christmas sale but even if it is not it looks well worth the asking price especially given the amount of hours of playtime you get from Paradox games.

Anyone else play Victoria 2?

I've been getting better and better with CK2, highlight for me was the other day. I was playing England, with Primogeniture succession (my oldest son inherits).

My oldest sons oldest son would be next in line of succession, but he was born with the "slow" trait, which made him awful. Yep, I plotted and succeeded in killing a 5 year old grandson just so he would never inherit my glorious Kingdom! :D

I've got CK2 but what with my current game of the Ottomans in EU4 and getting back into HoI3 (In preparation for the HoI4 release next year) I don't really have the time to learn it properly. This might be wrong but it feels like one of the hardest Paradox games to get into. It certainly looks fun.

I recently finished a HoI3 campaign as the USA, won the war by the back end of 1943, all axis powers puppeted. Pretty much cannot fail to win as the USA. I broke my record for staying up late whilst playing this time, Twenty past four in the morning . Played as Brazil in my first game and Soviet Union in the second, it is a magnificent game if you are at all into conquering style games, all the Paradox games are.

The problem with playing the USSR is you have to spend ages at the start of the game sorting out the OOB which I just find boring. Hopefully they streamline the process a bit in HoI4. I know historically the red army was in a mess at the time and thus the game is more historically accurate from a purely fun perspective I just find it a pain.

I don't want them to remove the feature in HoI4 just make the interface a bit easier to manage to speed up the whole process.

I bought EU4 when it was on sale the other day. Had a quick couple of hours on it. Sure is going to take getting used to. I loved HOI2.

UnstableVoltage on YouTube has some really good EU4 tutorials but (from memory) they assume you have some of (if not all of) the DLC for the game. They are a little out of date now that the Cossacks DLC has been released.

Just had a look on the Steam store and EU4 and CK2 were still a little pricey so I had a quick look on G2A for the Paradox Platinum Pack (£89.99 on steam) and just picked it up for £8.54 inc fees.

Got EU4, CK2, Cities in Motion, Magika, Worlock 2 and Knights of Pen and Paper so pretty good deal!

Yeah that is a pretty awesome deal. If you can pick up Victoria 2 as well cheap then I highly recommend it as it is one of the best Paradox games they have done.
