I'm surprised this heap of junk even floats, looks extremely dated. I guess that's infamous Kuznetsov barely chugging along in the background too?

lol:D

When the Type 23's were coming into service in the mid-late 90's they weren't very well thought of by practically everyone in the fleet.

Love the greater than thou attitude, isn't this the same one we had with the Falklands, Argentina have such old weapons we'll obliterate them with our tech.

Well history tells us that even out-dated weaponry can inflict great damage.

Also wasn't this on Thursday so is really old news now as they've long gone?

Very true, while doing training, I remember one of our instructors who was down there during the war saying the only ship the Argies had that they were worried about was the General Belgrano & how relieved they were when the Conqueror sunk it. They were confident they could deal with missiles out in open water, but her guns were another matter entirely.

Not true, I just think the US is the biggest threat to world peace. When the Russians behave in the same way the US does they will draw my criticism and annoyance.

you mean like constant probing airspace incursions? Invading neighbouring countries? Steaming naval fleets close to other states during times of high tensions?

No, theyd never do that...

I was watching the news the other night when they showed it, and my immediate comment on voice comms was "is that Russain Aircraft carrier burning coal?"

Diesel probably. its older than me and due to refit, not sure they have any others in service so that might be why the refit is being delayed.

Embarrassing as it might appear, at least they still have an active carrier.

Invading airspace? I think you need to read up on it more. Also do a comparison of US incursions vs Russian... You will be shocked. That powerful psychological urge of denial will kick in.

Invading neighbouring countries? How many has the US got a base in and how many are they actively involved in? Its still questionable as to the extent of "invasion" too. Pro-Tip: Don't trust Bellingcat

They are allowed to travel. You Dis have just shown yourself to be my first comment in this thread: "zomg!!!! Russians are coming to wage nuclear war on us!!!!". When its anything but. They are travelling to the Med and onwards. We may hear the same when they come to the Gibraltar straight.

Aye, I know it's diesel, but the amount of smoke and colour of it was more like an old coal fired engine than anything I'd have expected from a reasonably modern warship.

I doubt Russia can afford to make a modern one at this moment of time, so has to make do with what it has.
Not "needing" one is not the same "can't afford one"
Russia is one of the only countries in the world that has paid back it's debts in recent years, they have the money to make them without going into debt.
They "choose" not to have them because they have absolutely no need to be aggressive, Russia has very high natural gas reserves (probably why the yanks are circling their country with bases), and it's making them very rich.
They spend just what they need on defense rather than offense (just like we do now) because they don't plan on invading every country rich in natural resources like the Americans have done since WW2.

Carriers can be used for defence as well as offense - Russia could easily utilise 2 for purely defensive purposes.

Saw the fleet when i took the ferry to France on Friday. The big plume of black smoke was from the carrier. And they we're hugging the coastline pretty closely.

I never said they invaded anyone's airspace...

And the rest of your post...lol

Define: Incursion:
An invasion or attack, especially sudden or brief

Pwn3d

Its ok Dis

If you're going to try and be clever at least try and get it right:

"incursions into enemy territory"
synonyms: attack on, assault on, raid on, invasion of, storming of, overrunning of, foray into, blitz on, sortie into, sally against/into, advance on/into, push into, thrust into, descent on; intrusion into, trespass on, infiltration of, obtrusion into, appropriation of
"the first Ottoman incursion into Europe"

So yeah Dis86 used the word correctly, what a surprise.

Lol nope. You've just interpreted the sentence he made incorrectly. An incursion is defined as such. Don't take it up with me but Collins, Webster or Google.

You talked about incursions he made into enemy territory... Incursion is defined as an attack (eg show me where Russia have attacked us through our airspace)

Unlucky boycey

Can you give me a good reason why not? I think their open-source investigations would be rather easy to disprove if they were basically false, no?

Questionable information and ties.

For you, yes.

I give up. Even when you're given the dictionary definition of something you persist to have the last word even when you're completely wrong. Unbelievable.

People asking why the Russians have rolled out such a crap old aircraft carrier - they were due to get two brand new ones made by the French but the contract was cancelled due to the Ukraine-related sanctions.

Paperback Oxford Large Print Dictionary: ISBN: 978-0-19-921630-7

IncursionNOUN A brief invasion, a raid.

I'm not wrong. You are making stuff up that is clearly not what he said. I clarfied what he said. He denied it and was shown to be wrong. As are you.

Another dictionary:
Websters Concise Edition English Dictionary: ISBN: 978-1-85534-961-2
Page 166
IncursionN an invasion or raid into another's territory, etc

Dis said: you mean like constant probing airspace incursions?

You clearly missed that bit. He meant invasions of air space.

Now you can give up.

Wasn't that the helicarriers that were then sold. They had to give the £900mn or so back to Russia.

The Mistral is a helicopter carrier - it can't carry fixed-wing fast jets.
