Too many salty nvidia fanboys in this thread.

Managed to get a 6800 yesterday; to finally upgrade from my 780ti. I was considering the 3070 initially, but for a small amount the 16GB of VRAM makes a lot more sense; plus RT is a gimmick at the moment, imo, and without RT it destroys the 3070 and even trades blows with the 3080. First thing on my mind were the drivers. I gotta say, they are so much better than nVidia's. I quite like how easy it is setting up profiles for each game, or getting overlaid metrics, and generally seem so much more feature rich, without the need to run 3rd party apps to tweak the card or fan profiles.

I gotta say I love the card. Performance wise I was expecting it, can play new titles at 1440p Ultra no issues. What I wasn't expecting is how quiet it is and how cool it runs. Gaming with 100% GPU utilisation, my clocks hover around 2200-2250, with VRAM on a steady 1988. Temperature is between 68-71°C with the fans running around 1600RPM. At that level I can barely make it out from the other fans in my setup which are also set to run relatively quiet, as opposed to my 780ti, which was like a jet engine taking off, despite running at >90°C.

So overall; low acoustics, great performance and cool temperatures; for a reference model can't complaint.
Congrads that you got one. I'm glad to read that your 1st experience is a positive on.

7% on average in it? Nothing that can't be improved on.

Its because the 3080 has better memory bandwidth and better use of the cores at higher resolution. The 4k performance is down to the hardware. The 6800xt has 4608 shading units, 288 texture mapping units, and 128 ROPs. The 3080 has 8704 shading units, 272 texture mapping units, and 96 ROPs. Basically the extra shader units (nearly twice as many) and increased memory bandwidth gives the 3080 an advantage at 4k. The more ROPS gives the 6800xt faster performance in rasterization but memory bandwidth constrains and lower shader counts, hurt performance at 4k. So you dont get good scaling as resolution increases above 1440p on the 6800xt but you do on the RTX 3080 which allows it to pull ahead at 4k. This cant be fixed in drivers, its down to the hardware. The 6800xt is designed to be a 1440p card. The 3080 was designed to be fat at 4k. Even so my research at 1440p shows the 6800xt is most likely slower.

Some benchmark results look odd, like RT gives no performance hit when it does, see CoD: Warzone (RT). There are clear signs that some benchmark results for the 6800xt come from an overclocked card (I mean as far as the card goes on air, see arstechnica port royal result), see port royal. See the many benchmark results that reverse once you add another source because they overclock the card (). From what I can see so far it looks like the 3080 is faster at 1440p.

From what I can see the 3080 should not accept the 6800xt as faster at 1440p. in fact it looks like the 3080 is faster at 1440p and 4k; as well as DXR games and benchmarks by a large margin. Note: System configuration could be a big facter for many games at 1440p because many games are draws that who is best off from the draw depends on the system. Its very clear that the 6800xt is not a card that matches the 3080 for performance overall.

Not even basic reading comprehension. Good luck to ya.
Why dont you attack the argument and not the man. Have some culture man. Attacking the person not the argument is the last recourse of a dullard (can mean stupid or unimaginative person. I intend it to mean unimaginative person, the latter meaning https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dullard). I am not exchanging insults with you. I dont want a forum holiday.

Why do you think 3080 performance is so bad in Dirt5, even at 4k with RT enabled?
Ok it is ray tracing shadows only but why can`t 3080 do 4k and ray tracing shadows better than Radeon?
Can we think that some games are Radeon optimized and some ( like Control or Minecraft ) are Nvidia optimized? Or we should think that if Radeon wins then that game is Radeon optimized and if Nvidia wins then it is always fair game?
Dirt 5 is optimised for the Consoles. Due to AMD having the same hardware in consoles and in PCs, it's automatically optimised for AMD hardware.

So overall; low acoustics, great performance and cool temperatures; for a reference model can't complaint.
Glad to hear you’re enjoying the 6080. :)

Reviews have issues. 1440p multiple sources.

From the reviews I have seen the 6800XT can definitely be classed as a match for the 3080 at 1440p and within 8% at 4K it's an extremely good showing for AMD all things considered.

I have no idea where this idea that the 6800XT at 4k has some hidden meaning..... The card does what it does and it's very close (within 10% of the 3080) and that is dispite :

* Lower power draw
* Smaller memory bus
* Theoretically cheaper (will known more on that at AIB launch)

If anything the Achilles heel of RDNA2 is it's ray tracing, however I'm still unsure as to how much RT will be a factor until the next generation card anyway (RT seems to be very much like tesselation, and will take a good 3 card generations to be something usable across the board)

The performance is so close at 1440p in some games the performance boost of SAM matters. The main issue in heavy RT games is the lack of a DLSS feature. Basically every RT game that has DLSS is far faster on nvidia hardware and you really need it in heavy RT games like Control.

So hardware agnostic Cyberpunk will only give support to Nvidia RT at launch. Not that it matters, AMD RT is bad anyway, at least atm.
But next time you see a genius telling you that RT "is just DXR" or that "it`s hardware agnostic", ask him to explain how can the DXR work only on Nvidia.

I am sure 3080 is faster even at 800x600. And if there is a benchmark where 6800xt is looking faster, then most likely the 6800xt was overclocked and they don`t want you to know that. Or they underclocked the 3080. :)

AMD's ray-tracing is ok. The developers are responsible to optimise for it.

Your saying the reviews (like gamers nexus) are outright lying when they state the OC and stock figures (along with the OC settings) as they have the 6800XT coming out ahead in some 1080 and 1440 benchmarks . . . .

Is it really hard to think that AMD have a (gasp) card that's better at Nvidia at *some* games / resolutions

AMd do the same thing, Godfall uses DXr but AMD ask developer to block Nvidia from using rayvtracing

but that's ok, AMD can have Godfall and Nvidia will have Cyberpunk 2077

The 3080 is slower at 800x600. There are many reviews showing the total domination of the RX 6800 XT the lower resolution goes - and no, 3080 is not underclocked but heavily overclocked.

Yes I agree DLSS on RT enabled games is a killer feature for Nvidia at the moment. But personally I'm not convinced quite yet of how important RT will be for the next 2 years of games :)
