im buying one of the Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro CPU Cooler (Socket 775)
for my Core 2 Duo E6400 & GA-965P-DS3, and i need some heat dissipation stuff, i could go for the Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound (3.5g) but im a bit shaky about installing it all, and i would prefer using a pad rather than paste, are they any good, or should i really go for paste, or does it make no difference? and is the arctic cooling freezer as easy to fit as the stock cooler???

also i have overclocked my 6400 to 2.60gb using the bios! and i have looked on the system properties in the control panel (under the general tab, where it gives you the spec of the machine) and it reads that one core is running at 2.60gb and the other is running at (Stock) 2.13gb is this a fault (a foible of the OS) or is the 2nd core actually running at 2.13gb while the other is running @ 2.60gb ?????
cheers

My freezer pro 7 and as5 arrives today fingers crossed so I should have some answers for you... :D

As to your second question if you mean the bit where it says:

Computer:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
6600 @ 2.40GHz
2.40 GHz, 2.00GB of RAM
Physical Address Extension

Then only one of those shows your entire CPU overclock - the other one states what the CPU is at stock speed.

I can't say about your sys properties. But I went for the AC7Pro, used Arctic Thermal paste remover to clean off cpu and 7Pro, lapped it, and put on a bead of AC5 before fitting it. It was very straightforward, but I did have the mobo outside of the case at the time, but I'd say that even for an in-place board you should not have any snags. Good luck.

I got my E6300 running at 2.8.......

System properties says E6300 @ 1.86

then underneath says 2.8ghz........that means both cores are running at 2.8.......

Get CPU-Z and check though.

Also always go with thermal compound over the pads.....its really simple to use, nothing fidly.....

I bought a freezer 7 pro to go with my DS3 and E6300. I had temps as below at stock -

Idle - 57
Load - 68

I couldn't find out what the issue was until I took my case apart and found that there was a filter in the front air intake that was clogged with dust and dog hair! Anyway, cleaning that took my temps down to..

Idle - 44
Load - 54

To get to the point....that was much better but still high compared to some others that I have read on here so I cleaned off the thermal pad that came with the cooler and used some Antec Silver thermal compound instead. Temps came down to

Idle - 37
Load - 48

That demonstrates to me that using the thermal paste was better than the supplied pad. Or maybe just reseating it helped.....

the ac pro comes with some thermal paste i just used that lol. idle temps are 30c not sure of load never checked. in a normal room i would say add 5c to make it idle 35 in my antec p180. i say normal room cause i like the cold and have no heating were my pc is.

I'd reccomend fitting it out the case if possible... I just did mine in the case and it was extra hassle... also the little plastic clips on the bottom of the freezer 7 seem to be less sturdy than the stock HSF - I managed to bend both on one side without putting any real pressure on them - but didn't break them...

Scraping the stock crud off the HSF and the CPU and applying a thin layer of AS5 was no hassle at all...

after fitting it and booting up my temps went from:

Idle: 44
Load: 55

to:

Idle: 32
Load: 40

as per core temp.

I then overclocked to 3gig and getting:

Idle: 40
Load: 48

:)
