Things you miss about old PC Games

Yeah I think DLC's are now becoming popular simply because of piracy. A lot of games lose sales because of the fact people are downloading them from torrents, usenet etc, and games developers are trying to find ways to get the $$$ back. So with that, the genuine buyers get extra stuff, but the pirates get nothing - unless of course, they can now pirate DLC's too, which wouldn't surprise me.

I agree though, I used to enjoy buying expansion packs like Opposing Force for HL, and the Fight for Freedom pack for Hidden & Dangerous. :(

Not sure how to word this without is sounding silly.... but i enjoyed the unknown of games... i didnt have the net or get games magazines 15-20 years ago, so when id get a game it was based on the box (front and back)

Things looked cool and generally id enjoy the game for what it is/was... rather than nowadays i struggle to play games without having to know everything about it before ive got it, know what bugs there are, know if a patch is coming.... sports games to have the latest rosters and kits updated... with some sports titles (especially US sports) I buy the game and sit on it for about 1-2 months without really getting stuck in as im waiting for the game to get patched, updated rosters etc etc... something id never dream of doing in the old days.

It sounds silly, but I enjoyed the unknown, I enjoyed having a whopping great box with stuff in there to sell me the game, so when I installed/loaded it up I was ready to be wowed... now, ive seen the game in action before ive bought it, ive read all the reviews slagging off this or praising/spoiling that... before I play any game im thinking, whens the patch due

A basic example would be the old Champ Managers... id never ever dream of a patch, even in the 94/95 update that wouldnt let you buy foreigners until the 7th season!! Yes that was a crippling bug in all honesty as the likes of Gazza would be mid-30s before you could bring him home. But did i care? Not really, I got on with it, loved it, spent my life on it.

Now Football Manager, im ready for a day one patch, after that im reading the forums knowing there will be more bugs.. will that cripple my enjoyment? Probably as something silly always niggles at me now, im chasing perfection in a world of information... where as before I played for enjoyment in my universe of ignorant bliss.

Sorry for waffling, I know what I mean, I might have worded it wrong... but in my head its right :D

I agree.

But in my case, I bought the magazines and so knew about a lot of games. However in relation to your experience, not reading stuff on the internet allowed room for a lot of the "unknown". I also remember when magazines wouldn't slate a game and give it a worse score based on bugs. Hidden and Dangerous for example was riddled with bugs, but Pc Gamer still gave it an excellent rating and because of that, I went out and bought it and was one of my favourite gaming experiences. If they had gave it a bad score because it was buggy, I wouldn't have bothered. These days reviewers are quick to down score a game because of "bugs".

I'm right with you on this one. So much so that for single player games I avoid all reviews and forums until I've played through and enjoyed it for what I believe it is.

My other issue now is the time for playing the games. Not that I have less time, but rather that I have more available cash to spend on games, so pick them up as my inclination takes me. This results in more unfinished games on myself than I care to admit, and I'm starting to believe that because I'm not spending so much time with individual titles anymore, I'm not enjoying them as much

How good the game looked on the back of the box and then playing it and it looked like poo!

Game music. Loads of great tracks on CDs and I still remember tunes from my Amiga 500!
Playability. Now I will play a game and not even complete it because I will get bored. When games were easier and more fun I would play through and wish it didnt end
Copy protection wheels etc. Why cant games have this sort of thing more now?
