hi guys, on the lookout for a laptop and just cannot decide on which windows laptop to go for so iv decided to take the plunge into the mac end of things and am planning on ordering an MacBook Pro.

Just wondering would now be the best time to buy or is it worth holding off for any new releases this year? I have fancied a mac for a long long time but never had the £££ to afford one.

I know leopard is due out sometime in q1 but that would just be a simple upgrade, im more interested to know what hardware updates are likely if any. Im thinking that as it just has been upgraded to core2duo that there are not likely going to be any updates for a good while.
Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Tnx

I think the Macbook Pro is a safe option at the moment.. But when I bought my powerbook G4 it was upgraded with better screen and faster cpu and more hdd within a few months of purchase.

The thing is that if you wait, you will be waiting forever but like you said. Now runs Core Duo 2 so I personally would buy. Or wait for leopard.

i dont think id wait for the new os as its handy enough to upgrade when it arrives. I need it quite soon anyways. I can cope just fine with my outdated pc so it will probably be the same with a new MBP too i guess.

You do realise you'd need to pay extra to upgrade to Leopard? I'm not sure from your posts :)

yeah im aware of that - i am eligible for student discount so it shouldn't cost a whack!

edit: does it normally take a few days for them to arrive if they are being customised?

Leopard is gonna be £50/60 with education discount as 10.3 and 10.4 were.

Also, Concorde fan? :p

your dead right... this beauty is missed! I was on it when it came to Aldergrove as part of its retirment tour. Saw it at heathrow a few times too.

Have decided that I am gonna go for a Macbook pro at the weekend all being well. Can anyone recommend me a list of apps that are worth downloading for it???

You're probably looking at 10-14 days delivery -that is, unless they now ship faster. But when I ordered mine it took the best part of 2 weeks to arrive.

I think certain common configurations may be kept as stock in the Netherlands otherwise they come all the way from China.

Muhahahahah, I work on G-BBDG :D

I would definitely go for it now mate, I grabbed mine whilst in the states, It runs like a dream, I run bootcamp with XP and it runs counterstrike source like a dream on full settings 1440 x 900. I think the wait for any new hardware is going to be a long one, core 2 duo was such a leep as well. Try going into a mac store to get it, that is if they offer the student discount. You get it then and there.

iv been looking at one of these too and think now is the time to buy it. Nice to hear that it runs games well too although i will not be gaming that much.

What on earth would make you think that? :p

I've had the pleasure of flying on G-BOAD. Must find time to pay you and G-BBDG a visit again sometime when the weather gets a bit more favourable.

Back on topic, I must admit even I've been swayed by the Macbook Pro. If/when I need a new laptop, it may well be my first choice, though it'll be boot camped in a hurry because Mac OS X on a laptop isn't much use to me. :(

You are so lucky! I was still young when it was retired so i hadnt really any chance of going on it. Amazing bird it was!

Edit: back on topic. If I do get MBP do I have to install bootcamp on a partition? This involves a reinstall of osx obviously?
