thinking about a new car after xmas, is200/impreza

well i want a wrx because its always an impreza wrx, my love of the car goes back to colin mcrae rally days, he had a wrx. dont see the point in a normal one :p

Mcrae drove a WRC, not a WRX.

The WRX versions of the 93-00 Impreza are the higher powered import only models. I suspect a Turbo 2000 would be good enough for you - it's still turbo, it still has the bonnet scoop, etc..

my insurance went up when i became a HGV driver :( i dont think living in aspull helps either.

My insurance renewal for my old e38 7 Series was circa £700 when I renewed, this was "due to my high risk profession" - what a pile of **** !!!

I shopped around and got the same car covered with swiftcover for less than half that.

Many insurers penalise you for being a professional driver, they don't deserve your business, shop around.

Can't help with the OP, I don't like either.....:o

IS200 is slow yea, but it's also actually quite a nice car to drive, comfortable and very quite inside. If your going to get an Impreza be prepared for it to be unreliable, and cost plenty, usually they all do at some stage.

As for insurance companies rating professional drivers as high risk its just completely backward logic. Surely someone that drives every day is actually a better driver because of it? Same goes for mechanics, more chance that the car is well maintained, and you'd respect your machinery a bit more. Surely the unemployed and students are the most likely to have a smash/make a claim?
To be honest your occupation should have absolutely no bearing on your insurance costs what so ever. Its just like when they ask you the value of your car, like it has any bearing at all on what they'd offer you in the case of a total loss etc.

Back on topic, i'd shop around before you buy, so many good cars available for £5k, and neither of the two you listed in your op are one of them in my opinion.

sorry gotten confused.

this is the type i done like.

You take that back!

You won't have trouble finding an Impreza to match your budget - Pistonheads has over 500 WRX Imprezas showing - but you may have trouble finding one that hasn't been ragged silly. Unless you're mechanically competent around cars I'd strongly suggest getting a mechanic to have a good look at it before shelling out any money.

Do some reading up on service intervals because the big service (cambelt, all fluids etc etc) is expensive. A car that's already had this done will save you a lot of cash.

I've also got no idea why you consider the Impreza and the Lexus to be comparable but that's neither here nor there :)

If both cars meet the op's needs then looks can be the deciding factor.

I think that if he thinks they both meet his needs therefore deciding based on looks, then he doesn't really know anything about either car, he thinks both are 'some saloon car' and has picked two he thinks look nice. This means he's in for a shock when he choses one, either with how slow the Lexus is or how expensive to run the Impreza is.

I wonder why he is ignoring the IS300?

IS200 is not a bad car at all, and if you do want more performance could always go for an IS300 - or just remap :p
Supercharger kits are pretty decent for IS's - although not exactly cheap.

They're decent to drive and will give you around double the mpg of the Scooby.

Having said that, they are two very different styles of car. Also, I have no experiences of Scooby's at all so won't comment on that - unlike others :p

On a side note, do you try have to try hard to be so obtuse and ignorant Fox, or is that natural with you?

I think what the OP needs to do is a lot more homework on both cars in question and then the decision will be made naturally. At the moment I get the impression he has looked at photographs of each without really knowing much else and thought 'I like the way both those cars look'. In every other way they are quite different.

The Impreza is available in a plethora of different trim levels from just 200bhp right the way up to big power. He wants a WRX as thats what Colin used to rally - well no, Colin didn't drive a WRX he had a WRC which is a different beast. Therefore you don't need to get a WRX to get what you are after at all, a UK Turbo 2000 is easily affordable in budget and probably less faff than an older WRX Import. These cars are very thirsty and can be very expensive to run, but are very quick.

Next up the Lexus IS200. It is completely and utterly different to the Impreza. It has a better interior, it is more refined, it is better built, it is rear driver, it has no turbo, it has more cylinders, it has loads less power and is considerably slower. If you are happy with the performance of the IS200 then buy it as it'll be considerably less hassle to own than an Impreza, and much cheaper to insure and run.

I appreciate that sometimes you just might have two differnet cars on a list but these are so different from each other its hard to compare them. I don't think the OP really realises how different they are.

I'm not ignorant, but being obtuse is something that happens a lot. There isn't any ignorance in this thread on my part.

I don't want to verbally attack you or anything, as mostly you do give some good info and advice (eventually :p).
By ignorant I mean that some will buy a car based on looks / purely reviews or other things which some - such as yourself would class as silly - but at the end of the day, its their money, and they are free to spend it how they feel best.
If they want a IS200 over a scooby because it looks better then its up to them ;)

Co-incidentally, that's the kinda thing I meant about useful good advice :p

As mentioned, the car you choose (based on the principal you rank them both the same in terms of aesthetics) depends on what you'll use it for, and how you'll drive it

What he means is you should not base an expensive decision on looks alone, as Fox said an Impreza can be costly to run and if your not realy concerned about going fasy then he is just wasting money buying an Impreza.
