Thinking about changing the mx5, suggestions?

Another vote for the dc2. Lovely cars, cold be a touch extreme depending on what you class as acceptable in terms of ride quality/road noise etc!?

Ill probably be slated for this but if you like messing with your cars (properly not like chav), then the fiesta st is very underrated.

I have started getting underway with mine, power is easily amped up to around 180bhp-200bhp with varying torque with basic mods (FR cams, map and breathing) because of restrictive oem parts, a lot of weight can be taken out of them, and they handle awesome on track standard, let alone on good shocks like GAZ or bilstein, and with an easy sub £300 brake upgrade from the MK1 focus RS.

Worth a look in as insurers like Greenlight wont charge any extra for any of those mods bar a £25 admin fee when its all updated, so your paying 150bhp insurance for a 200bhp car.

If you wanted more power, buy a cheaper one and pay around £3k for a supercharger from someone like Jam-Sport with the potential of circa 270-370bhp depending on other mods.

Clio is a brilliant little car as well, and my mate has had one for almost two years with no trouble, early cambelt change though at around 35k iirc. Fiesta is chain driven so no worries here.

EDIT: can get these at around £3500k up to 8k for a newer one, and the i4 engine is built like a rock so dont worry about mileage.

Tbh I wasn't really wanting/needing to go that big. If the seats go down in the mini then it will be big enough. I had looked at a scoob but the insurance seems silly. The rx8 was in the back of my mind but the running cost I would have to fully work out first.

Isn't the ep3 just a worse version of the dc2 though?

One point about the mini if you do get one, stretch to the later supercharged ones with a chilli pack (around 54/55 i think). These come with an LSD and turn an already brilliantly handling car into a b road animal. Evo love it and its not hard to see why.

So it is the ones with the chilli pack which adds this on? That is worth bearing in mind though.

Amoeba, isn't the 200sx a bit of a cruiser really though? Doesn't it involve Modding to make it handle well?

350z is too expensive and I don't really like the fiesta St sorry.

Out of interest what sort of MPG do people get from the dc2 and ep3?

My average since owning it..

Total Spend
£3,271.90

Total Miles
17284

Total Litres

Average MPG
28.60

Pounds per mile AVG

Average miles per 40L

On a motorway run it does around 35 mpg

You could get a lovely S14a for that money :)

This! Although at standard it will feel pretty sedate compared to what your used to. If you can find one with bolt on mods done already they will most likely be hovering around the 280bhp mark and definitely feel a lot more sporty.

I average about 30mpg in my standard one on a 50mile round-trip commute on dual carriageways.

Not sure how you would view spending £4k+ on a 13yr old car though, I know many people who would cringe at it, but hey it's another option to consider :)

Yep, but to me modifying is half the fun. Plus with your budget you will either be able to pick a clean and fresh standard one or a highly modified one with all the handling stuff sorted. Being RWD and turbo they can be a bit of a handful but I am sure you are used to that anyway.

I use mine for a daily and have done over 20k in it since I bought it about 14 months ago, including driving 1k in 5 days touring Ireland. They are a great cruiser and can be made to handle too.

Take one for a test drive and see what you think, I love mine :)

Edit -- just seen your post above. Get signed up on www.sxoc.com/vbb and take a look around. If you are interested there are normally a few nice ones for sale and somebody from your area will probably offer you a drive in theirs if you ask nicely enough :)

It doesn't exactly handle like a boat at stock and grip levels in the dry are pretty good! Most people will advise you to get the rear subframe rebushed as the 200 is quite notorious for having a sloppy rear subframe and after that it's a case of sticking a set of coilovers in if you feel the need for it.

I did like my mates 200sx when I went out in it, but he did complain about it handling like a boat though which put me off! Will have to give one a go myself.

Will have to have a try of a dc2 and an ep3 I think. Only issue is finding a dc2 to test drive!

very different cars, cant really compare them.

EP3 sounds a good shout, best of both worlds. blady good on the juice when you aint in the mood too!

DC2 is completely different ball game for a daily, plus finding a decent DC2 with everything sorted is going to be hard for 5k too.

should i bought mine when i convinced myself selling it was a good thing!

You know what, I really do think you should sell your dc2. :p

To be honest how raw the dc2 isn't an issue to me. I am perfectly happy in my mx5 with hard suspension and a loud exhaust, plus the Dolomite before wasn't the most refined. Its just a case of finding a good one it seems.

Mine is anything but boat like.. it has had a few handling mods:

Apex gen2 coilovers
Apex adjustable rear control arms (poly bushed)
Tein tension rods (rose jointed)
Poly steering rack bush
18" lightweight(ish!) alloys

The above makes it handle a LOT better than stock, and you can easily find one with similar mods for your budget + loads more

The boot is no good for RC planes. Petrol size ones at least, mini electrics would be ok.

Suggestion: Toyota Celica. No idea about what it drives like. Thinking more of the boot size for a modern ish hatchback coupe for £5K.

Ahh I fly parkflyers so they only go up to ~1m wingspan. So it doesn't need to be a massive boot, just larger than the current mx5. :p
