Thinking about moving to Colombia, anyone been?

If thats true WOW:eek:

Shame we can't understand their english :)

How can we understand them if they can't understand each other?:D

In last 15 years China has changed dramatically. Have a good mate there.. teaching English:D.. 12 years ago he met a girl and they went from city to country for him to meet her family. Took then a full day of travel to get there. It rained while they were there and were 2 day late getting back to city. 3-5 years ago the same trip took a couple of hours each way. Now it takes all day because of traffic. :D

Yes, very impressive. Even more so when you consider how dangerous and competitive his chosen field was.

Sorry I don't think being powerful as a result of mass murder, torturer and all kinds of other perversion as being impressive.

Saying his life is impressive is like saying Hitler's life was impressive.

Oh, lots of conversation and debate.

Few comments - Currently just exploring options. Thailand/Vietnam and the like really doesn't interest me, and always fancied South America. As for why Colombia rather than Brazil/Argentina, and the like it's mainly due to cost of living and it's a little different. Plus, I was chatting to someone who has spent a fair bit of time there and she thinks it would be great for me.

In terms of the safety, I understand that it's pretty overhyped nowadays. Sure, it was incredibly dangerous and there are still problems (more so in the rural areas) but providing you keep your wits about you and are sensible then you should be alright. If I get robbed, I get robbed. It's part of the experience. ;)

No point holidaying somewhere before deciding if I want to move there, as not only would it be very expensive but it's very different living somewhere and holidaying there.

Got a few jobs to apply for today in Colombia, but also going to look further afield and include Brazil, Argentina and Peru.

I do not respect or agree with what he did but its still a achievement.

He started with nothing on the streets steeling cars and running small scams, then made 100k kidnapping and ransoming some company executive, they say he was making 20 billion per year when he died.

Rats ate $1 billion of Pablo Escobar's profits each year
The first thing you didn't know about Pablo Escobar testifies to an uncommon, staggering degree of wealth. According to Roberto Escobar, one of Pablo's closest brothers, at a time when their estimated profits were circling $20 billion annually "Pablo was earning so much that each year we would write off 10% of the money because the rats would eat it in storage or it would be damaged by water or lost."

If that weren't enough to drop your jaw, Roberto adds that the cartel spent as much as $2,500 every month on rubber bands to "hold the money together."

One word. Cocaine.

I think its funny you can sum it up in one word considering the standard of your posts suggest going beyond east London and listening to music prior to 2001 is an adventure.

Regardless of whether I have been or not its like me saying.....East London.....try hard hipsters, not very accurate!?

I spent January of 2011 and 2012 in Colombia and to echo some of the more sensible posts it has a pretty big mixture of wealth and poverty. Being 100% it is a third world country and that's not being elitist as the locals admit it themselves. You have some interesting contrasts, you can buy a coca cola for less than 50p as it is produced locally however if you want to buy a Nike tee shirt it is more expensive than in the UK combined with peoples lower average income.

It did seem pretty dangerous as I travelled most places in cars, very limit walking in the urban areas and people are reluctant to show off any form of material wealth. Very seldom do you see expensive cars as they make you a target.

Did not see one instance of drug taking, I have seen more living in London than there.....people are friendly and Euros are still uncommon enough to be interesting to the locals.

I heard plenty of stories of expats setting up language schools there and doing well, as a lot of students have a desire to learn English to better their job oppurtunities albeit a different type of lifestyle ie no gadgets, no iphones, no games consoles etc. Cheap beer, good weather, attractive women.

From all accounts if you were looking somewhere in SAmerica to try Brazil might be a good shot. Lots of investment there with the World Cup and Olympics coming soon and less obvious social issues.

If you wanted any more specific info just let me know
