Thinking about overclocking RAM... but have a few questions.

Ok, here are my current system specs that I think are relevant

MSI P67-GD65
i5-2500k @ 4.5ghz
A50 CPU Cooler
Antec 300

And of course RipjawsX 2x4GB

I've currently got no overclocking experience besides CPU and was wandering:

1. Do I need any sort of cooling to overclock these?
2. What sort of speed could I get out of these
3. What impact will it have on life expectancy

Any information would be a great help

Cheers,
Oliver

1. Do I need any sort of cooling to overclock these? Not really, they have pretty good heatsinks. Most RAM coolers are more gimmicky than anything. Decent air flow in your case will do just as good unless you're seriously pushing them.
2. What sort of speed could I get out of these? You could probably hit it up to 9-9-9-24 at 1866 without any bother. Just take it slow.
3. What impact will it have on life expectancy? As with overclocking anything, go slowly, and once you find a reasonable stable limit(Timings, Hz, Temps), back off about 5 notches, and you should be fine.

Overclocking RAM is quite similar to the 1155 socket cpus. You're changing fsb, vram, and timings. The realistic difference in noticable performance for what you're probably gonna use it for is negligible. (I'm guessing from your spec that you're a gamer.)

Any information would be a great help

Oliver

http://forums.extremeoverclocking.com/showthread.php?t=286070&highlight=Ultimate+RAM+guide It starts talking about overclocking somewhere down there.
