Thinking of getting Samsung Jet

I finally caved yesterday and got a nokia 5800.
I really wanted an android phone, but as far as i can tell the 5800 has all the features at half the price - decent browser and 3g, GPS, 8GB mem + 3.5" audio socket, touch screen and flash camera. Has no problems with youtube or iplayer.

I have the Samsung Jet on sim free so if you have any questions, just shoot.

My opinion of it is it is a pretty boring phone. You may already know it's not a smartphone so theres pretty much nothing to do on it. Limited apps/widgets...

Internet browsing on the phone is not the nicest experience, slow (even on wi-fi) and zooming and panning is laggy and not smooth (despite the 800Mhz processor). Maybe it's to do with the phone's firmware and it may be fixed in the near future...

MP3 player is very basic, it plays mp3s fine and the sound quality is acceptable. Browsing albums via album art is a painful process, again, despite the 800Mhz processor it is VERY laggy.

Video playback is no better, if you try playing a video file with 800x480 res, it will struggle. Plus the screen is too small to be watching any lengthy videos.

Now for some positives. The AMOLED 800x480 IS beautiful! Compared to my iPhone 3GS, the iPhone looks dull with less vivid colours.
Another positive is the TrackID feature is nearly twice as fast as shazam on my 3GS.
The camera is quite good with good lighting conditions but in low light it performs poor even with the dual LED flash.
Call quality is better than the iPhone and has better reception.
Finally, the form factor of the phone feels much nicer in the hand compared to the iPhone.

My advice is, if you are not looking for a smartphone buy the SE W995. It has good camera, good mp3 player and looks nice.
If you want a smartphone get the iPhone 3GS. If that is out of your price range, you can get pretty decent deals for the HTC Hero on the internet.

What about the Omnia HD instead? im torn between the Jet and that, its more expensive but Jet does sound little boring.

Again the Omnia HD AMOLED is brilliant but I'm not a fan symbian. I would only get that phone if I watched a lot of videos on my phone or if I shoot lots of videos. The video camera on that phone shoots HD (720p) and is by far the best quality on a phone right now.

If I had to choose between the Omnia HD vs Jet, hands down the HD!

At the end of the day, you need to think what you want to do with your phone.
If all you want to do is text/make calls, watch the occasional video, listen to music, check your email/browse the internet once in a while then the Jet will be suffice.

If you need exchange support, push email and want apps for your phone, then a smartphone is a must.

Sorry to derail your thread but... the chap above seems clued up on the Jet!
When trying to set up the wifi, it asks for the network WEP code, but only gives me 10 characters to enter it in, when the code itself has 13 characters - what gives? :)

Weird seeing as mine has the option for 128 bit? Sure you've actually had one? ;)

What?

I would think I'd know if I have the Jet?

Like I said, the Jet is a boring phone. Friend thought it was the worse phone he's ever had, wanted a quick sale, I bought it off him for £70 and now its going on the bay.

Yes I was wrong about the encryption. The phone is extremely slow, screen very unresponsive, web browser diabolical. I've got an iPhone 3GS, not going to waste my time on that phone. Impatience Is A Virtue, yes it is. ;)

sigh

i was thinking of a Jet too.. as you say some good cash back offers on at the moment!

alternatively the SE 995 or whatever it is sony ericson with 8mp camera?

or a HTC?! but they ALL get bad reviews...does anyone know a phone that gets good reviews?

do you even have to ask? does "there's an app for that" ring a bell? and it's not because it's the best phone about, it's just that 99% of the journalism(sp?) crowd is apple biased(either that or apple are buying the good reviews).

Sigh what?

I have both phones, I've tried them both. Sure one phone is more than twice as expensive as the other but the OP wanted to know opinions of the Jet.

I've given him what I thought about it, what's with the roll eyes?
What's not accurate about my post?

1- It's boring - theres no apps unlike a smartphone running symbian/android/apple - check
2- Phone is slow - compared to the HTC Diamond/Hero and 3GS (i've owned them all), if it's slower than the HTC Diamond, the phone is SLOW - check
3- Screen unresponsive - it's resistive unlike the Hero/3GS, sometimes you have to press really hard when going through menus/sending texts, even my Diamond was more responsive - check
4- Web browser diabolical - with the Jet connected to my home Wi-fi my 3GS is quicker loading engadget on EDGE (cache emptied) - check

The OP also wanted to know which to choose between the Jet and the i8910. I told him to get the i8910 as it's much better phone.

Tell me again, why are you sighing?

Sigh because no matter what phone is discussed or asked about it always seems to come back to 'well my iphone is better because blah blah blah'.

Indeed the i8910 is a better phone but then it costs considerably more, and so does the 3GS.

The Jet can be had brand new for £200 without contract, if I wanted the same on a 3GS then I'd be looking at nearer £800. Thats 400% the cost of the Jet, is it 400% better than the jet. I can't see it.

Its like comparing a BMW 5 Series to a Proton, you just wouldn't.

I'm not saying get the Jet, I'm just not comparing it to things in a different league.
