2x2gb + 2x1gb at 800mhz. Currently I have 4x1gb at 1066mhz.

Putting monetary reasons beside, would 6gb of RAM at 800mhz be satisfactory compared to 4gb at 1066?

I've been through about 4 mobos now and none of them can run my RAM at rated speed 100% properly. 800mhz is fine though.

6gb of anything is usually better than 4gb of anything.

But do you need 6gb or is it just a mad impulse to get more?

Kind of, although sometimes I have seen >4gb usage. One of the main issues I faced on 3 different "current" gen boards is none of them can run 24/7 100% stability at 1066mhz with 4 sticks. I am not talking about "8 hours of prime." I am talking about PC on 24/7 doing tasks for weeks. After several days, would get memory errors etc. Got a 2x2gb (OCZ Platinum) kit as a replacement for 4x1gb, but thinking maybe I can run all 4 sticks at 800mhz fine as the chipsets do not actually support 1066 natively.

I'd take 4gig @ 1066 over 6gig @ 800 every day of the week, personally.

However, if you are using over 4gig RAM then it sounds like you may have a use for it.

I cannot get the RAM to run 100% stable, yes it is fine for gaming etc, but not for continous use. When you really tax it at length then it will not be 100% stable. This is on 3 different motherboards now and I cannot be bothered trying more. Spending more time changing parts than actually doing anything.

The easiest way, it seems, is just to run the RAM at 800. Any differences is really minor TBH.
