Thinking of going to Barcelona:-where to stay?

Im thinking of going to Barca for a weekend, never been before and wondered where i should stay so i can walk everywhere (ie the center)

What part of Barcelona is good for nightlife/shops etc as my will be taking my better half as well......she will hate being dragged around the nou camp
